Writer: Nicholas Sparks

Genre: Romance, Drama, Contemporary Fiction

Online: The writer's official website has information on all of his books, as well as the movies based on them.

Work: Nicholas Sparks has written a couple dozen novels, all love stories in one way or another, including The Notebook and The Last Song.

Why You Should Read: Because his novels make good movies. That might seem like a strange reason, but it's the truth. A lot of Nicholas Sparks' novels are hit or miss. The stories are good, but sometimes the execution is poor. But several of his most famous novels have been turned into films.

He writes amazing love stories, the kind that can make anyone believe in true love conquering all, and he runs the gamut of ages and types of love. There are stories about two people meeting for the first time and instantly connecting, of people who have to work through their differences before they can even become friends, and of people who miss their chance once only to find one another again much later in life. All of his novels also deal with some type of tragedy — something to demonstrate to the reader that life is short and that it should be embraced.

My Pick: His newest novel, The Last Song. I have a hard time getting through Sparks' novels usually. They aren't quick, easy reads, but The Last Song kept me engaged enough that I finished it in only a couple of days, so it's definitely my top pick.
