September Issue - Written by: Julie Goldberg
Hunter is on the second level of the “cool pyramid”. In other words, he’s a trend setter. No, he doesn’t come up with the cool, new ideas you see in malls today. He merely observes, finds innovators (the ones who started it all), and takes their ideas to be sold to everyone. Everything seemed to be so clear and simple until he met Jen: class A innovator. Obviously having some attraction towards her, Hunter decides to invite her to a focus group meeting, where they discuss an item (in this case a commercial) to see if it should be produced. After an odd meeting, it appears that Hunter’s boss goes missing. It’s up to Jen and Hunter to find her and bring her back safely. But from who? That is the biggest mystery of all. Once again, Scott Westerfeld brings a tremendous story to life! I simply adore his writing style and I know you will, as well. In a semi-light-hearted way, he makes you question everything you’ve ever known; in this case, being cool. His characters are also highly realistic. They face problems with possible solutions rather than some farfetched, crazy luck. Westerfeld also has a way of making every scene fun, no matter the seriousness of it all. Despite all the mystery, satire, and romance, this novel still has a profound, underlying message. That is what I love most about all of his work. If he’s not your favorite author already, this book might have you questioning why he isn’t. Oh yeah, the title might be a big help: “So, Yesterday”. So, scurry off to the bookstores because this is a book worth your time. You might also enjoy “Midnighters” by Scott Westerfeld or “Uglies” Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.
