September Issue - Written by: Julie Goldberg
Jan Miller has gone through her life believing it'd be the most average, and least exciting. I mean, her best friend is an absolute "It Girl" who goes out all the time. Jan can't even speak around boys without her head exploding. Often lost in her fake reality, Jan has pretty low self-esteem, claiming to be a "Not It Girl". But when she falls madly in love (or so she thinks, I mean, she's a teenage girl for crying out loud) with Josh, she'll do all it takes to win him over. If she could ever stop making a fool of herself. However, aside from the nonexistent love life and humor, this book really has a heart to it. Melissa Kantor brings us a tale of what every teenage girl has gone through: self esteem issues. Face it, if you're a girl you've always had the moment of "I'm fat!" or "Look at her, she's way prettier than me!" Can you blame us? Media drags us around, telling us how to look or who to look up to. We're all trying to stand out but all we can do is blend in. This leads to characters like Jan Miller. Within the humor, daydreams, and hilarious situations are constant thoughts of self-doubt. It pegs how a lot of girls feel nowadays. While it's a quick read, it sheds a lot of light on the truth. I highly recommend this novel. You won't regret it! If you enjoy this, you might also like "The Break-up Bible" by Melissa Kantor!
