A Character’s Clothes: Rory Gilmore
By Simone (Age 20, Germany)

There are only a few shows that use fashion in the sense of having tons of fun. Most characters of our favourite shows are dressed to their nines. Some look silly to express themselves, some look sexy. But the only time the have fun with their styles is usually in their Halloween episodes (or if Mr Big gets sick in Carrie’s case or if Satana is looking for love on “Glee”’s Valentine’s Day episode). On “Gilmore Girls” they always go crazy with their looks. This show is just so hilarious and intelligent it’s worth taking a look!

Alexis Bledel, who plays Lorelai “Rory” Gilmore, is famous for her baby blue eyes. Her best fashion moments on the show are when she’s wearing blue, as this is putting a huge focus on her gorgeous eyes. But you can also watch Rory’s style evolve when looking at Alexis wearing blue. For Rory’s prom in season one, she’s wearing a dark blue, short dress. She looks very young and innocent – although rumour has it later that she slept with Dean in Ms Patty’s dance studio. In season five she’s attending a secret party with Logan. In “You Jump I Jump Jack” she wears a long, bright blue gown and looks very much like a lady.

Good thing is that the Chilton uniform Rory wears throughout her school career at that expensive ivy school is blue. There are only a few accessories to play with a strict school uniform. In Rory’s case that means headbands and her yellow backpack – or a grey pretty cardigan!

The Chilton uniform returned in season five, when Rory was invited to a Quentin Tarantino party. She was dressed up as Gogo from “Kill Bill”. Dressing up is something the Gilmore girls are really good at. First example was given when Rory was making dinner for Dean. This episode in season one is called “That Damned Donna Reed” and therefore Rory is dressed as the perfect wife. She put on 50s clothes once again for the “We’ve Got Magic To Do”-episode where she’s organizing a World War II-themed DAR bash.

But Rory’s mother Lorelai, played by the wonderful Lauren Graham, also loves to dress up. In season seven she’s trying to make Rory feel better about not going to Asia – she brings Asia to Stars Hollow! She also urged Rory to wear a 20s themed dress for the dancing marathon in season three which shows why we love the Gilmore girls the most: They work as the perfect union!
