Classic Young TV Couples
Written by: Angela Lee

Friends, enemies, innocent, starcrossed – they’re just some of the makings of what makes a great supercouple. In honour of Valentines Day this month, Portrait takes a look at some of television’s classic young couples and their memorable moments!

Angela & Jordan (My So Called Life)
The Good Girl Goes Rebel.

Angela Chase was your typical 15 year old girl trying to discover who she was. Upon doing so, she traded in her sensible old friends for flashy and rebellious new ones. As a result of this, Angela became closer to resident misfit Jordan Catalano, who she had been pining over for months. But appearances don’t always match reality, with Jordan not meeting Angela’s pedestal expectations. While Jordan may not have been a change to Angela for the better, she certainly was for him. She gave him a reason to try in life and not to drop out of school. Too bad Jordan realised this after betraying Angela.
Memorable Moment: When Jordan realised how much he values Angela in his life and how much he screwed up: “It’s like you think you’re safe or something, ‘cause you can just walk away anytime, because you don’t like need her. You don’t need anyone. But the thing you didn’t realise is, you’re wrong.”

Cory & Topanga (Boy Meets World)
Best Friends Forever.

They had known each other since they were two years old and were best friends as kids. Even though his older brother convinced him that girls were icky, ultimately tearing their friendship apart, Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence would ultimately find their way back to each other. For awhile Cory saw Topanga as the oddball hippy outcast, but once they reached high school, he saw her as beautiful and smart and fell in love with her. This would eventually lead to a few marriage proposals including one at their high school graduation and then finally getting married after their first year of college.
Memorable Moment: In Season 4, Topanga’s parents force her to move to Pittsburgh and Cory is distraught. He makes this beautiful long speech to his mom about his love for Topanga and the history they share: “…She was always talking about these crazy things and I never understood a word she said. All I understood was that she was the girl I sat up every night thinking about, and when I’m with her I feel happy to be alive. Like I can do anything, even talk to you like this. So that’s what I feel love is Mom. When I’m better because she’s here…and now she won’t be...”

Zack & Kelly (Saved By The Bell)
High School Sweethearts.

He was a charming schemer and lovable larrikin; obsessively in love with her for many years (does cardboard cut out ring a bell?) She was the popular but kind-hearted cheerleader. Together, Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski were one of the most loved couples from Saved By the Bell. They may have broken up and gotten back together a few times, but eventually they got their happily ever after and married in a TV movie.
Memorable Moment:
When Zack set up a picnic outside of the prom because Kelly couldn’t afford to go to Prom. Awww.

DJ & Steve (Full House)
First Love.

When DJ Tanner arrived home from a school trip in Spain, no one expected her to come home with a boyfriend – Steve Hale, a fellow senior at DJ’s school. For two years this couple kept us entertained with their first love dating antics, but sadly like most first loves, DJ and Steve drifted apart. The pair tried to remain friends and then Steve went to college. He returned in the series finale as DJ’s surprise prom date.
Memorable Moment: Steve follows the Tanner family to their family vacation at Disney World, Florida, unable to be away from DJ. “I kept seeing you too! At the supermarket I saw your face in the cauliflower, and then at the Sizzler bar I saw you in my cheese toast. And that’s when I knew that I just had to see you. I mean here in person, not in my side dish.”

Felicity & Ben (Felicity)
Chasing the Man of Her Dreams.

At her high school graduation, Felicity Porter finally summoned the courage to approach her crush of four years Ben Convington, and asked him to sign her yearbook. Despite the fact that he had never spoken a word to her, Felicity is so touched by Ben’s words that she abandons her plan of attending medical school and follows Ben to the University of New York. Initially he doesn’t see her as more than a potential friend but for four years they have on/off again relationship, before finally ending up together at the show’s end. It would seem that your years is their special symbol.
Memorable Moment: At the end of Season 2, Ben confesses that if he could change one moment where he screwed up, it would be the time where he stood Felicity up for one of their dates. He brings the film that they were meant to watch on that date and the pair reunites, watching the film on the rooftop of D&D.

Pacey & Joey (Dawson’s Creek)
From Sparring Partners to Lovers.

Pacey Witter and Joey Potter were the best friends of Dawson Leery, but hated each other. Their scathing remarks and antagonizing antics kept viewers entertained at the start of the show. Yet at some point during season one, the ice began to thaw and Pacey even kissed Joey! But it wouldn’t be until season three with the distractions of other love interests behind them that Pacey began to really fall in love with Miss Potter. Insecurities and future aspirations tore them apart in season four, but Pacey and Joey finally made their way back to each other during the show’s end in season six.
Memorable Moment: That dance at the Anti-Prom in season 3. From the longing looks to wistful sighs to Pacey’s confession, was enough to make any fangirl melt.

Pacey: Well because you told me. Six months ago. You were wearing that blue sweater with the snowflakes that you have. You were walking down the hallways at school and I was annoying you per usual. You said, “Look Pacey, I just found my mother’s bracelet this morning, so why don’t you cut me some slack?”
Joey: You remember that?
Pacey: I remember everything.

Summer & Seth (The O.C.)
Undeniable Destiny.

He had loved her since they were 10. But for socially awkward Seth Cohen, the beautiful and popular Summer Roberts was unattainable. Yet that didn’t stop him from loving her from afar and naming his boat after her. The arrival of Ryan Atwood brought Summer and Seth together but they would become sparring bantering partners before lovers. They may have encountered a few bumps along the way, but for Summer and Seth it has always been them – their love is too undeniable for anyone else to even compete.
Memorable Moment: When you think Summer and Seth, you really can’t go past the Spiderman kiss. As much as it is overly referred to, it’s always going to be a pivotal Summer and Seth moment.

Ryan and Marissa (The O.C.)
Starcrossed.

There’s always been a stracrossed element to Ryan Atwood and Marissa Cooper’s relationship. But it was those starcrossed elements that kept viewers enthralled with their relationship. From jealous boyfriends to new friends, to drug overdoses and disapproving mothers, Ryan and Marissa’s relationship was anything but boring. In the end, this misunderstood boy from the wrong part of town and the former teen dream princess, were close to a modern version of Romeo and Juliet, and the starcrossed element only heightened when Marissa was suddenly killed in a car accident.
Memorable Moment: The first kiss. After weeks of unresolved tension, Ryan and Marissa finally got their act together when she kissed him on the school carnival’s Ferris wheel to distract him from his fear of heights. It was certainly remembered as a grand gesture and the perfect way to end a fight.

Amy & Ephram (Everwood)
Coming Back To You.

When Ephram Brown first moved to the small town of Everwood, resident sweetheart Amy Abbott, was intrigued by him. It wasn’t before long that Ephram fell for Amy and they became friends. The death of her long time boyfriend Colin broke their friendship apart, but the two tentatively found their way back to each other. Without the baggage of the past the two finally realised that the time was finally right to start a relationship. The problem with the past is that you can never just ignore it. The reappearance of Ephram’s ex-girlfriend Madison, and a life altering secret drove Amy and Ephram apart. But like I said, you can never ignore the past, and finally it worked in Amy and Ephram’s favour – bringing them back together in the series finale.
Memorable Moment: Amy was determined to win back Ephram in the series finale, despite the fact that he had a new girlfriend. Knowing how important this moment would be, Amy pulled out all stops and hired a Ferris wheel – a symbol of a pivotal point in their relationship – and declared her unwavering love for Ephram: “See that’s the thing. Every time I try to forget the feelings that I have for you, they keep coming back and now they’re back and I don’t want to push them down anymore. I don’t want to run away from us. Cause I never want to lose you again. I just want to be with you, next to you, wherever you are.”

Rory & Jess (Gilmore Girls)
More Than Meets the Eye.

Rory Gilmore was the treasured town princess and Jess Mariano was the town’s James Dean, aka bad boy with depth. They may have looked like an odd couple to outsiders, but in their own way they fit. The two intellectuals challenged each other in a way that no one else could. From the very first moment they met there were sparks and you could tell that they had chemistry. He may have left town abruptly and broken her heart, but he would return to town a season later to declare his love for her. He returned to the show again in season five a changed man, owing it all to Rory. They may not have been together at the show’s end, but fans hold on to the hope that they ultimately would.
Memorable Moment: Rory and Jess aren’t known for typical teen sweet love declarations, opting for witty banter instead. But fans awed during this scene between the pair when Jess looks up the distance between Yale and Stars Hollow.

Jess: 22.8 miles
Rory: How’d you know that?
Jess: Do you Yahoo?
Rory: You looked it up?
Jess: Yeah
Rory: You looked it up?
Jess: I just hit a couple of buttons on the computer.
Rory: You looked it up?
Jess: I was bored. There was nothing on TV and I was fooling around. It was something to do, that’s it.
Rory: You looked it up?

Logan & Veronica (Veronica Mars)
Epic Love.

A long time ago they used to be friends until tragic and misunderstood circumstances turned Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars into sparring enemies. However, when you have the kind of history that these two have, it’s hard to stay away from each other. Eventually the pair began to find a more positive path back to each other and began a rollercoaster romance. But no one writes songs about the ones that come easy and Logan and Veronica have definitely had their fair share of ups and downs and break-ups. Unlike most couples, even when they’re not together, their chemistry is still undeniably evident, keeping viewers enthralled with their snark and tension filled bantering. They may not have been together when the show ended but there’s no doubt that Logan and Veronica would have found their way back to each other once again. Their love is epic and epic is forever.
Memorable Moment: After a bitter break up, Logan and Veronica eventually found their way back to each other. There was a ray of hope for fans that their favourite couple could make it when Logan poured his heart out to unsuspecting Veronica at the Alterna-Prom. From the gentle gestures to the teary emotion and nervous sighs, you could see that Veronica was just as affected as Logan at the prospect of not having each other in their lives.
Logan: I thought our story was epic. You and me.
Veronica: Epic how?
Logan: Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined, bloodshed. Epic.
Veronica: …Come on. Ruined lives? Bloodshed? Do you really think a relationship should be that hard?
Logan: No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.

Buffy & Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Tragic Love.

He was a vampire and she was the vampire slayer. Yet Buffy and Angel defied the odds (and others) in order to be with each other. He may have been a vampire with a soul, allowing himself to love her, but in the end he sacrificed this love so that Buffy could have a somewhat resemblance of a normal life. There was never such a captivating love story that was as romantic and tragic as the story of Buffy and Angel.
Memorable Moment: When Buffy stabbed Angel at the end of season two. Hold on, hold on! It’s not as morbid as it sounds! Ask any Buffy/Angel shipper for their favourite Angel/Buffy moment and this one will be in at least their top three. Buffy was about to kill evil Angeleus when Angel’s soul was restored, turning Angeleus back into Angel. The pair share a tender reunion until Buffy heartbreakingly realises that she needs to kill Angel and send him to hell in order to save the world.
Buffy: (whispers) I love you.
Angel: (whispers) I love you.
Buffy: Close your eyes. (She reassuringly nods her head and Angel closes them. Buffy kisses him gently before stepping back to stab him in the chest)
Angel: (suddenly opens his eyes in shock as Hell begins to suck him in.) Buffy…

Donna & David (Beverly Hills 90210)
Happily Ever After.

After 10 years, fans let out a sigh of relief and a cheer when Donna Martin and David Silver finally married in the series finale. It was only fitting that this former geek and daddy’s little princess got their fairytale ending after everything they had been through, not just with each other but on the show in general – from drug usage to depression, from stalkers and rapists to abusive partners.
Memorable Moment: The couple encountered a lot during the 10 dramatic years of Beverly Hills 90210, but still managed to end up together in the end. Their beautiful wedding at the end of the show was a fitting testament to their love.

Liz & Max (Roswell)
Because It Was You.

When Max Evans saved Liz Parker’s life, little did she know that her life would change forever and not because she was shot. Max was actually an alien from a 1947 UFO crash, and had been in love with Liz since the first time he saw her back in 1989 when his alien pod hatched at the equivalent age of six. Max would do anything for Liz and break all the rules in the universe for her, even if it went against the destiny and responsibility of his future. However, Max and Liz had to sacrifice their love in order to stop the end of the world from happening. But you can’t stop true love – in the end, it’s too much to ignore. Max and Liz marry even though it is foreshadowed that they will die. The show ended with the two marrying in a chapel in the desert, before jumping into a van with their friends to continue their escape.
Memorable Moment: Max’s speech to Liz when he proposes. He even made the ring right in front of her eyes like Superman did.
Max: Liz. They’re taking our home from us. They want to kill us and they might. But when I look in your eyes I don’t feel angry or deprived. I feel like the luckiest half-human on the planet. You’re pure, you’re true, and you’re real. And right now that seems like the only thing that’s important. I want to be with you Liz. Forever.
Liz: Forever may only be 12 days.
Max: Then we’ll take those 12 days and we’ll live 12 times…Liz Parker, will you marry me?
Liz: Yes.

Sarah & Bailey (Party of Five)
Through Thick and Thin.

Bailey Salinger and Sarah Reeves were not your perfect couple. There were times where he treated her badly, but she still stood by him. When he reached college, Bailey began to spin out of control, ultimately injuring Sarah in a drink-driving incident was his wake up call to grow up and change. The two remained friends and would eventually find their way back romantically. Sarah saved Bailey and made him want to become a better person. Bailey would go on to propose to Sarah but she turned him down. Yet they still managed to stay together until Sarah left town to find her biological father. Although he tried to move on after she left, there will never be anyone as sweet or who understands Bailey the way that Sarah does.
Memorable Moment: When Bailey proposed to Sarah at the dockyard where his dad proposed to his mom. Of course it wasn’t the happiest proposal when Sarah said no, but the proposal itself was romantic and sweet.
