Out with the blockbusters and in with the Oscar worthy. As the Summer comes to end, so does the season of blockbuster movies. Heading into the Fall, along come the great story telling movies, where the script is just as important at the special effects. Fall/Winter sees the arrival of a lot of the Oscar contenders, so this month, Portrait decided to take a look at some of the possible movies, that might just take home that all important gold statue in 2011.

"The Social Network"
24th September 2010 (New York Film Festival) / 1 October 2010 (General)

Plot: "The Social Network" tells the story of the founders of the biggest online network, Facebook. You might be thinking, it's probably about a bunch of computer techs sat in there room day on end, creating the world biggest social website. Well, that's partly true, but I think one of the films tags line, sums it up a treat - You don't get to 500 million friends, without making a few enemies. As with the rise of anything huge, there usually comes a down fall. The film also takes a look at the complications that occured in both facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg's personal and legal life.

Whose in it: Cast in the lead role is Jesse Eisenberg, who has starred in last years hot movies, Adventureland and Zombieland. New Spider-Man, Andres Garfield, who stars as co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and Justin Timberlake, who plays co-founder Sean Parker. There is also Disney channel star Brenda Song, Max Minghella, and a host of other names too.

What has it got going for it: It's directore, David Fincher, has already been nominated for best picture before for "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button", and also helmed hit movies, Panic Room, Zodiac and Fight Club. Kevin Spacey is producing too, and it's pakced with great acting talent. The only down side might come from the face that real life Zuckerberg, isn't happy with "The Social Network" being based on him.

"London Boulevard"
October 2010 (General)

Plot: If your a fan of crime, drama, and romance, "London Boulevard" could be just the film for you. The films plot is a bit like that of the movie "Bodyguard". It centers around a reclusive actress, who shys away from the world, by sticking to the 4 walls of her Holland Park mansion. She hires herself a recently released criminal to be her bodyguard and handyman. Being a criminal though, soon following is a whole load of gangster, and as most films go, he ends up falling in love with his employee.

Whose in it: As our actress is Keria Knightley, best know for the Pirates movie, and Atonement. Irishman Colin Farell stars as her bodyguard criminal, best know for movies such as Phonebooth, Miami Vice and In Bruges. Co stars include a crop of UK acting talent including David Thewlis, Anna Friel, and Ray Winstone.

What has it got going for it: Director, William Monahan, maybe be helming his first movie as a director, but his writing skills are well known. He has scripted movies, Kingdom of Heaven, Ocasr winning - The Departed, Body of Lies, Edge of Darkness, as well as this movie. The films acting talent is also first rate, with its lead stars fanbase more than likely to come out and support the movie. The lead stars are familiar faces too, so I'd expect this movie to be a hit.

"Black Swan"
1 December 2010 (US)

Plot: If your a fan of ballet dancing, this might just be your thing. However, if your a bigger fan of psychological thrillers, this is right up you alley. The film tells the story of a New York City ballet companies upcoming production of Swan Lake. Our story follows Nina, who lives with her former ballerina mother, as she competes for the lead in the producation. Nina finds herself competing with Lily, who fits the characteristics of the black swan perfectally, while Nina fits the White swan. As Nina and Lily's rivalry escalates, Nina finds herself becoming more in touch with her dark side, something that could threaten to destory her.

Whose in it: Nina is potrayed by Natalie Portman, Who is best known for films like Leon, The Star Wars Series, and more recently, Brothers. Staring as her competitor Lily, is Mila Kunis, best know for her voice work in Family Guy, and for recent movies Date Night, and Book of Eli, as well as the TV show, That 70's Show. Other notable cast are Winona Ryder, and Vincent Cassel.

What has it got going for it: At the helm of the movie is Dareen Aronofsky, whoes last movie, The Wrestler, which recieve Oscar noms for acting, and was a mainstream success. He's also known for the weird and wonderful films such as The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream. But with two great lead actresses, and a great story, I think this films going to be excellent.

"Somewhere"
22 December 2010 (US)

Plot: "Somewhere" centers around Hollywood bad boy actor, Johnny Marco, who has far more money then sense, and live in the Chateau Marmont hotel. Things change though when he paid an unexpected visit by his 11 year old daughter, and Johnny takes a closer look at his current lifestlye, opting to change for the better.

Whose in it: Cast in the lead role of Johnny is Stephen Dorff, best known for his work in music videos, such as "Everytime" by Britney Spears, and for the Blade movies. Cast as his 11 year old daughter is the lovely Elle Fanning, sister of Dakota, who is also carving out her won successful movie career in films such as Babel, and Phoebe in Wonderland. Other acst members include Benicio del Toro and Michelle Monadghan.

What has it got going for it: It's director is Sofia Coppola, who has a family load of directoral experience behind her. She has so far directed hit movies The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, and Marie Antoinette. Lost in Translation was nominated for Best Picture and Director, and won for Best Original Screenplay. She has also won a Golden Globe and BAFTA. With it's simple story, but emotional content, and reported great chemistry between father and daughter actors, the film could easily be a hit with mainstream audiences too.
