Fan Fiction Club
By Anna (Age 15, USA)

Have you discovered the wonderful world of fan fiction? A Fan Fiction is a fictional story in which the writer borrows the character, the premise or some other aspect from an existing film, book, movie, etc. Fan Fictions are a great platform for young, aspiring writers to grow their talents while providing entertainment for others. In Portrait's new column: Fan Fiction Spotlight, we highlight a collection of entertaining fan fictions we've found on the internet.

There is an Envelope and a Slip of Paper, a Gossip Girl Fanfic.
Rated K.
Personally, I don’t think the pairing of Nate Archibald and Jenny Humphrey gets enough attention in the world of fanfiction. Of course, I’m also not the most die-hard fan of gossip girl, so there is probably a reason for this that I don’t know about. But after reading this fanfiction, I am convinced that whatever that reason is, it should be burned at the stake. Decapitated. To the guillotine with whatever is ensuring that stories like this one are so few and far between! Whether you’re not a Gossip Girl fan or a Nate and Jenny shipper, you should definitely check out this fanfic. Why? Because it’s amazing. For the most part, it’s pretty non-specific. If I’d read it without knowing it was a Gossip Girl fanfiction, it still would have given me butterflies. It’s a one-shot, and mostly fluff, but it’s extremely well written, and I don’t know about you, but personally, I squee anytime I come across a fanfiction that is free of the usual grammatical errors and typos. Anyway, this is just great.

The Happiest We’ve Been in a While, a Glee Fanfic.
Rated T.
What with Glee having been off the air for the past few months, I think it’s safe to assume that I’m not the only one who’s been craving anything – and I mean anything – that has to do with it. Which is why I was so drawn to this fanfic initially. It was about Glee, it was multi-chaptered and complete - a rarity in itself. It also helped that the two main characters listed in the description were an unlikely pair, to say the least. Tina and Puck? Who would have thought? This fanfiction chronicles the ups and down of the unlikely friendship (and budding romance?) that forms between Tina and Puck after she confesses to Artie that she has been faking her lisp. Though Puck is a lot nicer than we’re used to, and we see very little of some of the main characters (Rachel and Finn, anyone?), this is actually quite pleasant. Most of the characters are true to canon – I was particularly fond of Brittany and Mike, whom the author featured more liberally than we have seen in the show. Overall, it was like any other half-decent fanfic – loaded with drama, sap (sparingly, in this case), and a few jabs at humor (successful, on the most part.) However, I suggest reading it, because it takes a very unconventional pair and weaves a very believable story around them. Really, despite the occasional switching from the past tense to the present, this was fanfiction at its greatest. The whole reason fanfiction exists, after all, is so fans can run away with their imaginations.
