Picture this: you’re out shopping with one of your friends and you both fall in love with this certain bright red dress. You decide to both try it on. Your best friend comes out of the change room in the dress looking absolutely amazing. You come out of the change room and you… don’t. It fits great, you love the dress but you don’t love it on you. So what’s wrong? What makes your friend look amazing in the dress and not you? It’s your skin tone. That shade of red overwhelms your skin colour. Your friend has a completely different skin tone. It flatters her. In the end, she gets the dress and you go and find a just as amazing dress that makes you look fantastic. Don’t know your skin tone? Well they are grouped into “seasons” to help us try and figure it out. Take a look at the undertone of your skin in natural daylight. Winter complexions have blue or pink undertones. Skin can be pale white, yellowish-olive, or dark. Winter people are generally brunettes, with deeply colored eyes. Summer complexions, like winter complexions, have blue or pink undertones. Skin is pale and pink. Summers are often natural blondes or brunettes with pale eyes. Autumn complexions have golden undertones. Many redheads and brunettes with golden brown eyes fall into this category. Spring complexions have golden undertones and are usually creamy white or peach. Spring people generally have straw-colored or strawberry red hair, freckles, rosy cheeks, and blue or green eyes. Ok, so now that you have figured out what your skin tone is (I’m personally a summer with fair skin, natural blond hair and dark blue eyes) what are your best colour options? Winters should wear colors that are sharp, stark and clear. White, black, navy blue, red and shocking pink all go well with winter complexions. For lighter colors, wear icy tones rather than pastels. Avoid subdued tones like beige, orange and gold. Summers should choose pastels and soft neutrals with rose and blue undertones. Lavender, plum, rose-brown and soft blue suit summers well while black and orange do not. Autumns should select colors with golden undertones, like camel, beige, orange, gold and dark brown. Avoid colors with blue tones, like navy. Springs can wear warm colors like camel, peach, golden yellow and golden brown. Avoid dark, dull colors. A little confused? You can technically simplify it more: you can have a cool undertone or a warm undertone. Cool toned people tend to have a pink or rosy skin tone. Warm toned people will have a more golden or apricot undertone. Cool toned persons will look best in blue-based colors; warm toned persons will look best in yellow-based colors. Ultimately it’s your choice to determine how much you follow these “rules”. I still wear black. All three dresses are from Fred Flare; $65 USD. |
