Fashion Spotlight:

Fashion at MTV’s Video Music Awards nearly took a backseat to the fiasco on stage this year. (To those who missed it: In the middle of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, Kanye West ran up on stage, took her mike and said that Beyonce had the best video and deserved the award. Taylor was almost in tears, naturally. Beyonce later, proving to be a class act, gave up her own stage time later in the show to give Taylor a chance at her speech again.)

But regardless of the drama, fashion at the VMA’s is always crazy. This year was no exception. From Pink and Shakira wearing the same dress (can we say stylists are in trouble) to the obsession with sparkly outfits, the VMA’s were a parade of style. I don’t even know where to begin with Lady Gaga’s outfits. The greatest trend seemed to be sparkly dresses with mini dresses closely behind.

It is nice to see the trend change a little from the casual beach style to a more polished look. A natural look and minimal makeup is great for the grocery store. The red carpet deserves a bigger splash. Kudos to the stars who showed up and went all out. Even Kristen Stewart went with an adorable dress and lost the Converse! Take a look at the rest of this week’s fashion coverage of the Video Music Awards and let us know what you think.

This Week's Fashion Highlights:
Which celebs have been sporting some seriously cute outfits this week:

Taylor Swift - VMA’s
The country star’s retro hairstyle paired perfectly with her off the shoulder dress at this year’s VMA. She balanced grownup and youthful very tastefully, while managing to fit the night’s sparkly trend.

Selena Gomez - Creative Arts Emmys
The star of Wizards of Waverly Place looked gorgeous in this (color) dress from (designer). A winner of a dress to match the show’s win.

Gossip Girl’s 1920s looks
Yes, its for an upcoming episode but these outfits are killer. Flapper parties will be all the rage this fall!

The Super, The So-So, and The Seriously Should Think Again:

Super:

Taylor Swift’s VMA red dress: Gorgeous, fun, and red…a very trendy color.

Lauren Conrad:
The Diane Von Furstenberg managed to ride the line between mini and classy.

Chace Crawford:
An excellent blend of dressy casual.

Taylor Lautner:
This is one 17 year old who knows how to look fantastic.

So-So:

Leighton Meester:
The dress is super but the hair is a little too wild to really be the perfect choice.

Pink/Shakira:
While both look lovely, the dress just doesn’t quite fit for either of these songstresses.

Ashley Greene:
Her fashion correspondent outfit was lovely but this outfit can’t quite decide what to be.

Seriously Should Think Again:

Lady Gaga:
All of her outfits are over the top but this red lace ensemble took the cake.

Whitney Port:
Between the ill fitting bodice, odd lines and random sheer pieces, who knows what Whitney was thinking. Maybe her brain was missing pieces too?

Katy Perry:
The metallic wrapping paper skirt is bad enough but the top does nothing to flatter. A full length skirt or a better designed bodice could have sent Katy from scary to super, instead we’re left with this.

Hint and Tip of the Week:
Tip: Sparkly dresses were all the rage at this year's VMAs. And nothing is easier at making a fun, flirty statement then a sparkling dress. The key is to be simple in accessories. Stick to one piece of jewelry, either earrings or bracelet. And go with a neutral colored clutch and shoes. Adding extra color will make your outfit too busy. Dress a little too sparkly? Add a cropped leather jacket or funky belt to break up the sparkle.
