Friday nights just got super. Yep, this fall, Fridays are the day to tune into the CW. Smallville moved to Fridays last season and Supernatural is rounding out the weekend super slots. Some might worry because Friday nights are traditionally the kiss of death for a television show. Last fall though, (2009), Smallville proved that not only could it still pull in viewers, they had the best ratings of any CW show on a Friday night, ever. Oh, and they regularly beat out Melrose Place and 90210 (who got the cushy Wednesday night slots) in the ratings too. Supernatural meanwhile, had a great time following new hit show The Vampire Diaries. Still, one might wonder what will happen now that Supernatural has joined Smallville in the Friday night slot. This has happened before though. And if the past is any indication, Smallville and Supernatural make up an out of this world duo.
Many of you probably watch these shows already, but for those who don’t, or who need a refresher, let’s catch you up on our beloved superheroes. If you haven’t been watching, now might be a good time to start. Smallville is entering its 10th and final season. While moving to Metropolis so late may mean your opinions on shippers won’t be as strong, it will be well worth the chance to see Clark Kent don the iconic Superman costume and take his first flight. Supernatural has two things going for it. For starters, Eric Kripke, the original show creator had planned for a 5 season series. Thus with this being the 6th season, the show can break new ground while viewers won’t be quite as lost among the mythology. Secondly, Supernatural has always been, first and foremost, about the Winchester brothers. That means there’s a lot fewer characters to keep track of. Either way, you might as well know what’s going on. Supernatural The bottom line is that Supernatural is about two brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, who fight demons. Season 5, the most recent has been an intense season but according to many, one of the show’s best as far as individual episodes go. It focused on Sam & Dean’s broken relationship with each other and the Apocalypse. It’s worth noting that an apocalypse on Supernatural actually means something, unlike other shows (I’m looking at you “Angel”). Season 5 also marked Misha Collins (Castiel) becoming a regular cast member rather than his recurring status. The end of the season showed the boys’ battle against Lucifer. Sam becomes a vessel for Lucifer, hoping to overpower him but isn’t strong enough. Lucifer (in Sam’s body) kills Castiel and Bobby before viciously beating Dean. Sam is able to remember who he is though and imprison Lucifer by throwing himself into hell. Castiel is resurrected as an angel again, heals Dean, and brings Bobby back to life. Castiel returns to heaven and Dean turns his back on hunting demons to have a normal life. At the very end we saw Sam looking in the window at Dean’s “family”. Looking forward to next season, new showrunner Sera Gamble, has stated that the show is going back to the traditional monster of the week style episode but with a heavy focus on the brothers’ relationship. It’s an exciting time to be a Supernatural fan.
