The Hemsworth Brothers

Not familiar with the Hemsworth brothers? It’s a safe bet you soon will be. These fresh Australian exports are slowly making their mark with defining and lead roles in modern classics such as Star Trek, The Last Song and comic book hero adaption Thor. But don’t be fooled, these roles haven’t just landed in their laps overnight. The Hemsworth brothers have been in show business for years and have finally begun to make themselves recognisable household names.

Chris Hemsworth

Luke, Chris and Liam were all born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. The sons of Leonie and Craig Hemsworth, the family later relocated to Phillip Island, south of Melbourne. The three brothers have always been close and spent a majority of their time together, mostly lapping up the Australian sunshine while pursing their hobby of surfing. While the two older brothers, Luke and Chris, knew from an early age that they wanted to go into acting, it took younger brother Liam a little while longer to be infected with the acting bug. Liam originally laid floors before deciding to follow his talented brothers and venture into acting. His first order of business was to get an agent and he found no trouble in catching the eye of the talent scouts, landing his first audition at the age of sixteen.

United in their love for acting, these brothers even go on to the same auditions. Liam Hemsworth commented "We are brothers and we are always competitive, but it is a good thing, it pushes us both and we are always happy whenever someone books something.” Liam and Luke both had roles in one of Australia’s most loved soaps, also a breeding ground for antipodean talent, Neighbours. Chris however, always keen to be marked out from his brothers, took a role in its rival Home and Away. It may come as some surprise however to learn that it was Chris and Liam who decided to make the move to America to pursue a Hollywood career while Luke stayed settled in Australia. He is currently one of their biggest television stars, taking on roles in some of their most popular series, which are also shown internationally, including Blue Heelers, Last Man Standing, All Saints and The Saddle Club.

Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Chris’s big break came in the opening scenes of J.J Abrams 2009 blockbuster reboot of a science fiction classic, Star Trek. He portrayed James Kirk’s heroic father, George Kirk. After being entrusted with the opening of one of the biggest movies of last decade and winning over millions of fans to the idea of the remake, Chris Hemsworth is now preparing to become the newest actor to portray a Marvel superhero. April 29th sees the UK opening of Thor where he plays the title hero and Chris will be again playing this character in future Marvel releases, namely The Avengers which is schedule for worldwide release in 2012. However it was actually Liam who was originally asked by director Kenneth Branagh to test for the role of Thor in March. He, as history tells us, lost the role to brother Chris in May. “[Liam and I] both auditioned for it, funny enough,” Hemsworth said during an interview last year at Comic-Con International: San Diego. “I had an audition, didn’t hear anything. The next minute I heard they were flying Liam over to meet Kenneth Branagh, and he was down to the last four guys, and I was like, ‘What?’” Liam met with respected star of stage and screen Branagh, and even though it didn’t work out for the younger brother, Chris states that he was instrumental in him getting the role of Thor “And then I got another phone call [from Branagh] and was like, ‘S__, Liam. What worked, what didn’t? Tell me what he said! I got some advice, and …here we are.” However later that same week Liam scored the role of “Will Blakelee” in the movie The Last Song starring alongside teen favorite Miley Cyrus.

Liam Hemsworth

Liam’s managed to get his own role of a lifetime however, when he was cast last month in The Hunger Games. Liam will be playing the role of Peeta, one of the boys who love and fight alongside Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of the book trilogy. Chris will be a household name this summer and Liam is right behind him. As long as these talented brothers don’t lose their strong supportive bond of one other, they should find other Hollywood roles roll their way for many years to come.
