Instant Star
The Fourth and Final Season

By Kat

Alexz Johnson plays Jude Harrison

“Instant Star” has been a favorite of mine since discovering the show a number of years ago. The series came from the creators of the hit series “Degrassi: The Next Generation” and debuted in 2004. Following a teenage singer’s life after winning an “American Idol” style competition, the series won a loyal fan base of fans from more then 120 countries with it’s portrayal of a teenage girl navigating the normal challenges of teenage hood in the fast paced and complicated music scene. Each episode of the show featured an original song performed by the series star, Alexz Johnson that are also available in the Seasonal soundtracks. It was the music that pulled in a great deal of the viewers, for others the insider peek into the celebrity lifestyle and for others the fantastic chemistry between Alexz Johnson and Tim Rozon and their characters Jude and Tommy. Jude, an independent, strong and loyal character was also a fantastic role model for young viewers.

The fourth and final season of the series will be airing on The N in the USA throughout April.

Fans hopes of a fifth season where dashed In December when the Executive producer made the following announcement:

The decision has been made that in fact Instant Star will end at the end of Season 4. There will be no Season 5. We have let the cast and crew know this. We have let them know how enormously proud we are of them for having been part of the creation of one of the most innovative and original tv series in television history. And they have responded with thanks and congratulations—not many series get even four seasons, and Instant Star has been an enormous success in over 120 countries around the world for exactly that!!!

Not willing to let go so quickly, fans organized a ‘Save the Show’ campaign that included a petition which garnered over 10,000 signatures in a number of months. Now it’s a definite fact that the show won’t be returning we’re all waiting with baited breath for the final thirteen episodes to air.

Spied and Karma's rocky road of wedded bliss is captured in the reality show “Rock 'N Roll Honeymoon”

Season four returns more then a year since the third season wrapped up in May of 2007. The last season closed on a cliffhanger and come June 2nd it will be revealed if Jude Harrison chose to pursue a romantic relationship with her lifelong best friend or the Producer she’s been in love with since she was fifteen. Questions also abound regarding the state of record label G-Major and what dramatic sacrifice Tommy Quincy made to secure Jude’s entire music catalogue. The Season promises to contain its fair share of romantic ups and downs, not least of which include fellow label mates Spied and Karma’s “Newlyweds” style reality show: “Rock 'N Roll Honeymoon”. The two ‘accidentally’ wed in the Season finale and their rocky road of wedded bliss, not to mention Karma's continued rabid desire for fame, will undoubtedly be amusing.

Pegan and Zeppelin

New characters this season include Zeppelin, a character who has been described as adorable. Zeppelin is rumored to be a new romantic interest for Jamie who also has a biological connection to another character on the show. She will be interning at Jamie and Pagen’s new record label.

The fourth ‘Instant Star’ competition is running and competing for the title that made Jude a star is Blu, played by “Degrassi’s” Cassie Steele. "She's a little bit out there, as you can see," Cassie told eTALK, motioning to her bright blue hair in an interview while filming Season 4. She went on to reveal, "She's a bit of a go-getter, she's kind of manipulative... she knows

Cassie Steele plays the aptly named 'Blu'

what she wants and she'll do anything to get it."

Cassie, who is also a musician in real life, originally auditioned for "Instant Star" as well as Degrassi. When she landed the role of Blu she was able to bring her own songs. "Instant Star" and "Degrassi" share the same sound stage and many of the same crew. "It's a different world completely, different scripts, different cast. It feels totally different then you see a crew member that works here and you're like 'Hi Brian, hi Ian, How are you doing?'"

Also competiting for the title is Milo, played by singer/songwriter/actor Kyle Riabko. Kyle recently won the lead role in the broadway production of ‘Spring Awakening’ and his single ‘Song for Amanda’ is making buzz on the internet. The song, which will be featured in Season four of “Instant Star” was written about his celebrity crush, Amanda Bynes and there is a campaign based on the Six degrees of separation theory which strives to get the song to Amanda herself. Check it out at SongforAmanda.Com and hey, if you know Amanda; pass it on!

Tommy, Darius and Jude

Fan Forums are buzzing about Season’s four new songs, most of which were leaked onto the internet recently. Alexz Johnson wrote the upbeat ‘I just wanted your love’, her first return to writing songs for the series since Season one. “To be honest with you there wasn’t even a definite decision to not write for the show, there wasn’t a ‘I’m not going to write for the show anymore, and that’s it’ it was just kind of during that time in my life during season two, I was working so much on my own music and I just didn’t write anything for the show. And during season four one day, I was just kind of messing around with my bro one day writing this song that didn’t really sound like something that should be on my record so I thought ‘hey, why not just give this to season four of Instant Star’ “ she told alexz-johnson.net

A ‘minisode’ music video of the series was released online in May and recently won Bronze at the Telly Awards. You can view the mini, along with the others that have been released, at the end of this article.

Season Four Songs
Which is your favorite?

In a recent interview with Alexz-Johnson.Net, Alexz commented on the shows conclusion and if it was the right time. “I do think it was time, it felt like the perfect time for Jude to move on, the character to kind of get out of G-Major and just move on. I don’t know what else they could have done with that storyline to be honest with you. Four years…she’s with Tommy, she’s not with Tommy, she loves Tommy…I mean, she’ll always love Tommy but I think it’s just good timing. And it was an amazing time, doing that show. Four years and it was really a blast.”

“You know, when you do a show for four years every single day with these people, they’re just a part of you, seriously, for the rest of your life. Whenever I’m going to be in town, or whenever we’re in the same city, we’ll definitely try and hook up and meet up. We’re pretty close. And they’re awesome, it kind of becomes like family. And that’s what’s weird about not being on a TV show anymore is that you become so close to these people, and then everyone goes off and lives where they live- Tim’s in Montreal, and I go off to L.A., or London or where ever, and it’s kind of crazy. But we do keep in touch, and thank goodness there’s cellphones.”

Thanks to the magical world of fan fiction (Check out mine), the characters will live on in the hearts and imagination of the shows loyal fan base. It’s been a fantastic ride and we’re glad to have taken it.

What’s up next for the Cast?

Alexz and Laura are both busy on new projects

Alexz Johnson (Jude) recently finished up recording her highly anticipated debut album in LA. She told Alexz-Johnson.Net “So far, production is pretty much complete. It’s in the process of being mastered right now. And yeah, I just got back to Vancouver so I get to see family and friends for a bit.” A release date hasn’t been set yet but she’s hoping to tour and release the album this year or early next year.

Tim Rozon (Tommy) will appear in the horror film sequel Screamers II.

Laura Vandervoort (Sadie) has confirmed she won’t be reprising her role as Kara, AKA ‘Supergirl’, for the eighth and final season of “Smallville”, after having played the character throughout season seven. She’s currently in Hawaii filming a sequel to Into the Blue called Into the Blue 2: The Reef.

Tyler Kyte (Spied) is releasing his debut album with Orange Records sometime in the near future according to the Executive Producer of “Instant Star”.

Cory Lee’s sophomore album ‘Sinful Innocence’ is in stores now. She has recently been promoting the album in Europe and Asia. Her new video ‘Ovaload’ was released recently.
