Girl Crush 101 By Jenna Templeton You have probably seen the new buzzwords ‘Girl Crush’ splashed across blog pages or maybe even heard amongst your school peers. So what is a ‘Girl Crush’? Who do you have a ‘Girl Crush’ on? Portrait Manual is here to give you the 101 scoop on the topic!! Before you start thinking you need to clean out your closet only to put your self inside while throwing away the key! A Girl Crush does not require the need for that type of girl-on-girl action. A Girl Crush is when you have a slight obsession and admiration for another girl’s sense of style, achievements, personal charisma and you want to be just like her. Urbandictionary.com goes on to describe the Girl Crush saying; Girl Crushes are generally very short lived, as we move on very quickly from trends. I guess that is why we call it a ‘crush’ as the origin of the word comes from a combination of the words ‘crazy’ and ‘rush’. There are two types of Girl Crushes they are the Celebrity Girl Crush and the non-Celebrity Girl Crush.
Eve 16 has a Celebrity Girl Crush on Hilary Duff. “I love Hilary! She seems so down to earth and she doesn’t run around at Hollywood parties drunk and flashing her privates! She is a great role model, has a great career and I would love to aspire to be like her”. “I knew I had a Girl Crush on Hilary when I realised I was scouting the internet on info about her day to day whereabouts. I own every one of her movies and CD’s, I copied her elegant funky style, bought her perfume to smell like her and grabbed any magazine that featured her on the cover or in the magazine at all!” Eve’s Diagnosis: Celebrity Girl Crush
She might be the girl in your class that you always thought you would get along with but never had the courage to approach; she might be a friend of a friend, a girl in your group, your best bud. You think her MySpace page is cool and you subscribe to her blog, she could even be that funky looking girl at your local Westfield! With this type of Girl Crush you might feel hints of jealousy towards this girl, wish you had her life, career, boyfriend, same clothes, make-up, car, and body. In many ways you could envy her but you mainly idolize the ground she walks on. However the beauty of having a non-Celebrity Girl Crush is often the ‘crush’ can turn into a great friendship. Natalie 18 has a non-Celebrity Girl Crush on her dance school teacher. “I want to be a dancer in music video’s when I grow up so I really look up to my dance teacher. She always seems so sure about herself and carries herself in a very confident way. I can be very shy and have low self esteem sometimes so if I could aspire to be like someone I would like it to be her.” “I do admit that I might often copy her clothes and music tastes”.
While it is perfectly fine and natural to have Girl Cruses it is important that you remember that you are unique. Always remember who you are and what your personal interests, style likes and dislikes are because that is what makes you your own person!
