A Month on the Internet:
December 2011

By Eloise

It's amazing what you can find on the internet. Not only can you keep up with hot goss in celeb world here at Portrait Mag, but you can find some pretty interesting things. Below are interesting stories, viral videos, funny videos and some unique pictures, all from November and December. Hope you enjoy!

The Interesting Stories

1. You know how sometimes dogs aren't permitted in an area or certain buildings? Well at the Beach Bablyon cafe in Wellington, New Zealand, they allow dogs to come into the cafe. In fact they have dog beds and hooks for leashes around the cafe! The cafe even has a menu aimed at dogs, which features:

  • Beef and beer - $2.50
  • Doggoccino - $2.50
  • Pea and ham gazpacho - $3
  • Oaty doggy treats - $3
  • Pupsicles - $3
  • Deluxe mutt mince - $8
However the menu is only available at weekends, with a percentage of the profits from the menu for dogs going to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

  • 2. Speaking of animals, who's played the addictive game Angry Birds?
If yes, and you're an avid fan, you should head down to Helsinki - which is the capital of Finland - because there's an Angry Birds store. But get this, the shop officially opened at 11:11am local time on 11-11-11, just to take advantage of the good karma associated at that time. Talk about being superstitious. But, I wonder...if you play the game in the store...will you get good luck?

    3. Now an unfortunate story about a 59-year old man, Graham Lord. In 2009 Doctors told him he had stomach cancer. So the doctors removed 80 percent of his stomach. Six weeks after his operation, it was found that the tissue taken out of him had no signs of cancer at all! So he's now suing the Central Coast Local Health District. In addition to losing parts of his stomach, he's also shed 20kg, can't eat sitting down and suffers anxiety and depression. How could they misdiagnose this?

    4. Moving onwards, a 17th century cottage is found in Lancashire, England. In addition, a mummified cat was found in a sealed room. Historians believed it belongs to one of the Pendle witches. Intriguing right?

    5. Anyways, relatives of Robert Stringer - an eleven year old boy, killed by a car back in 1980 - catches a grave robber in Essex, England. But they didn't catch them with their bare hands or some elaborate trap, more of the sneaky way by getting it on camera! Relatives expecting to see young hooligans on the camera footage, saw an elderly woman paying her respects, then walking off with a bunch of flowers in her hands. Pictures to see for yourself: here

Lastly, not a story, but lately over at Twitter they've been reviewing the year with a theme everyday in the month of December here. It's been like an Advent calendar, minus the chocolate.

    Viral videos on YouTube

    1. "My story" is an amazing video that touches on losing the ones you love, and knowing people around you that have gone away. It gets emotional, so if something resonates with you, you should talk to someone about it, whether that be family, friends, a psychologist or GP. (It's nice to have the extra weight off your shoulders taken) Also know that you're not alone no matter how it feels.

A factsheet about loss and grief if you want; here

    Onwards to the video:

If you can't watch the video, remember this: ELE - Everybody Loves Everybody.

    2. This is a funny video about Why men and women can't be friends. It takes a person with a microphone, who's been followed by a cameraperson to ask a few simple questions to various people, which make them realise the answer to the question. Before you watch, think of your answer and why. Then watch. It's more fun that way. :D

That's really it for the 'viral videos on YouTube.' But I've got two more videos I would like to share.

    3. An interesting video of a mountain biker and a snowboarder racing down a snowy mountain. Who do you think will win? Watch and find out for yourself.

    4. And lastly a funny one. It's a challenge between a Blonde vs Escalator. You can watch it here
