New Kids On Your TV Block 2011: The Girls
By Amanda Bruce (24, USA)
This years crop of new TV gals is pretty diverse. We've got a trio of witches, a pair who were “switched at birth,” and even a time traveler. Read on to see which of these lovely ladies you'll be seeing more of on your television screens.
 |
New Kid: Zooey Deschanel
Born: January 17 1980
Claim To Fame: Her character Jessica in New Girl is a recently dumped twenty-something who finds herself rooming with a group of guys
The Right Stuff: While the younger Deschanel sister isn't really known for her TV roles (that's her big sister Emily as the title character in Bones), she's got the performance chops to back up her work ethic. Born in to a creative family, she's an indie darling for the majority of her films, including (500) Days of Summer, but she's also done romantic comedies like Failure to Launch, and even voiceover work for Surf's Up. Zooey's also half of the musical duo She and Him. (The other half is M. Ward.) And word is, her character on her new TV series might just randomly burst into song once in a while.

New Kid: Jessica Parker Kennedy
Born: October 3 1984
Claim To Fame: Though her character Melissa is best friend to coven leader Dianna, you can expect Jessica to be portraying a bit of an outsider on The Secret Circle
The Right Stuff: Jessica is probably most memorable to younger audiences as the best friend to Selena Gomez in Another Cinderella Story, but she's also appeared in quite a few other projects on both television and film, including the Canadian horror series Valemont, and most recently as Plastique on Smallville. 2011 is definitely her year though. In addition to her work on her new series, Jessica's already appeared in a TV movie, another series, and she's also got three more films in the works.

New Kid: Katie Leclerc
Born: November 6 1986
Claim To Fame: She's Daphne, one of the two switched teens, in the newest ABC Family hit Switched At Birth
The Right Stuff: Katie became interested in acting when she performed in theater productions as a child. And though she's done plenty of commercials over the years, her first guest starring spot was in Veronica Mars a few years back. She's had plenty of small TV guest spots since then, and even a couple of movies, but Switched at Birth is really her break out role.
|
New Kid: Shelley Hennig
Born: January 2 1987
Claim To Fame: The leader of The Secret Circle, Shelley stars as Dianna
The Right Stuff: As a teenager, Shelley competed in beauty pageants growing up, even winning the 2004 Miss Teen Louisiana and Miss Teen USA pageants, so she's no stranger to performing for a crowd. For the last four years, she's handled the role of Stephanie on the soap opera Days of Our Lives, and even scored a Daytime Emmy nomination for her work last year, so we know she's got the drama aspect of her acting role down pat. This is her first prime time role though, so Secret Circle should provide a great breakout vehicle for her, much like it did for her Vampire Diaries network mates.
 |
New Kid: Phoebe Tonkin
Born: July 12 1989
Claim To Fame: She stars as Faye, a mean girl who's a real witch, in the CW's Secret Circle
The Right Stuff: With a long stint on the Australian tween drama H20, this former mermaid isn't exactly brand new to TV, or supernatural storylines. She's logged plenty of on set time in guest spots on Aussie shows Home and Away and Packed To The Rafters as well, so she's well versed in drama. She's also a commercial (catalog) model, and she even made her big screen debut in the film Tomorrow, When The War Began last year. And though all of these have done great things for her career in Australia, she hasn't exactly gone what you would call “mainstream.” Secret Circle will mark her American debut though, and will likely introduce her to a whole new audience.

New Kid: Lindsay Pearce
Born: April 30 1991
Claim To Fame: As a runner-up on the reality series The Glee Project, she's been give a pair of episode appearances on Glee
The Right Stuff: Unlike pretty much everyone else on this list, Lindsay doesn't have any professional acting experience. She grew up with three brothers, and disliked her high school experience so much that she began taking classes at a junior college when she was only 16. That's where she got into theater. She's been competing in talent competitions for a while as well, and it was at one of those competitions where she was invited to audition for The Glee Project by a casting director. Though she didn't win, Lindsay did score herself a couple of appearances on Glee to give her career a jump start.
 |
New Kid: Grace Phipps
Born: May 4 1992
Claim To Fame: The Nine Lives of Chloe King wouldn't be the same without Grace as the eccentric Amy, Chloe's best friend
The Right Stuff: You might be surprised to find out that Amy is actually only Grace's second professional acting job. She grew up in Texas doing theater, and even went to a performing arts high school. When she graduated in 2010, Grace decided to try her luck at Hollywood. She was all prepared to face rejection, like so many actors before her, but after only a few weeks in California, she auditioned and won a role in the remake of the 1980s vampire flick Fright Night, and then went on to addition for ABC Family. Talk about a break out star!

New Kid: Vanessa Marano
Born: October 31 1992
Claim To Fame: As Daphne, a teenage girl who was Switched at Birth with Katie Leclerc
The Right Stuff: Vanessa has a pretty impressive resume. She's logged lots of hours on prime time dramas like Dexter and Without a Trace, and she's done a few TV movies as well. For the last few years she's starred as Eden in the younger crowd on the long running soap opera The Young And The Restless. She even has a movie coming out later this year called The Secret Lives of Dorks. But to most of us, she'll always be April Nardini of Gilmore Girls fame. Appearing on a show like Gilmore Girls, which reached icon status so quickly, can be a hard image to shake. With all the attention Vanessa's been receiving in her new role as the Switched Bay, she might be able to do that quicker than most.
 |
New Kid: Naomi Scott
Born: May 6 1993
Claim To Fame: She's Maddy in the long delayed series Terra Nova about a family sent back in time to get a second chance at building a civilization
The Right Stuff: Naomi grew up doing musicals in school and singing in choirs. You probably recognize her from her recent role as Mo in the Disney Channel original movie, and rumor has it she might be reprising that role sometime in the future. Before that, she had a short lived series on Disney UK where she was the main character. Terra Nova will be her first major non-Disney project, and since the show has seen long production delays over the last year, expect critics to pay a lot of attention to it.
 |
New Kid: Peyton List
Born: April 6 1998
Claim To Fame: As Emma, Debby Ryan will be her new nanny in the Disney series Jessie
The Right Stuff: Peyton has had a pretty active career for her young thirteen years, though most of her roles have been playing the “young” version of older actresses, like Katherin Heigl's perpetual bridesmaid in 27 Dresses. In 2010 though she nabbed roles in high profile projects like Bereavement and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. And with this year's Diary of a Wimpy Kid installment, she's seen a lot more projects thrown her way. She is the perfect age to get her start on the Disney Channel though. It's a network known for turning teen actresses into household names, and she's a part of the new crop of talent making their debuts this year.
 |
New Kid: Tiffany Espensen
Born: February 10 1999
Claim To Fame: As Piper, the precocious younger sister to Ashley Argota's Kelly, on Bucket and Skinner's Epic Adventures
The Right Stuff: The youngest of our new kids, you would think that Tiffany wouldn't have that much work under her belt. And while most of her roles are of the unnamed variety, like “Little Girl” in several of her TV appearances, she's also done a lot of voiceover work for cartoons like Special Agent Oso and Phineas and Ferb. This also isn't the first time she's acted with her onscreen big sister. She actually played “young Lulu,” the younger version of Ashley Argota's True Jackson, VP character in an episode flashback. She also had a big screen role in this year's feature film Hop. We're sure Tiffany's got a bright future ahead of her.
 |
New Kid: Jane Levy
Born: Unknown
Claim To Fame: She stars as the sarcastic suburban transplant in Suburgatory
The Right Stuff: Not much is known about Jane, but after a recurring role on Shameless earlier this year, she proved to casting directors everywhere she had what it takes to make it in Hollywood. Now, she's got a cushy spot on a primetime sitcom, and she's got three movies in the works. She recently completed filming on Fun Size with Victoria Justice, which will be out in October.
