Party Themes: Singles Awareness Party
By Melissa (Age: 25, USA)

My favorite t-shirt reads like this:
A dozen roses—$25
Box of Chocolates—$40
Dinner for two—$80
Knowing St Valentine was beaten to death and beheaded?
PRICELESS.

In other words, I’m not the biggest fan of February 14th. And while part of that is because I’ve always been single on said day, I really just hate forced gifts. Roses on Valentine’s Day don’t do it for me, daisies for no reason at all are perfect. But Singles Awareness Day on February 15th is something I’m totally down for. So for those of you like me—here’s a fun party to throw. Couples excluded.

Singles Awareness Day

(If you feel particularly twisted, I recommend all black decorations, but bright lights-no mood lighting here! Play games involving throwing water ballons at happy couples. Or darts. But that’s only if you’re really twisted.)

Black isn’t always bitter.

Décor:

Yellows and oranges symbolize friendship, not love, plus they’re bright colors that remind party goers that spring is on its way. For those of you in the Southern hemisphere…at least they’re already summer colors! Print off pictures of famously single men and women and inspirational quotes as well and hang the pictures around the room and quotes on tables.

Music:

Go with fun, upbeat songs. The key is to stay away from love songs unless they are easily mocked. An example would be Hero by Enrique Iglesias. If you want a playlist a little more obviously sympathetic to singles, check this one out.

I will Survive-Gloria Gaynor
Love Stinks-Adam Sandler
Goodbye to You-Michelle Branch
Since U Been Gone-Kelly Clarkson
Anti-Love Song-Lenny Kravitz
Hot N' Cold, Katy Perry
Single By Choice-The Bangles
Stronger Women-Jewel
Fighter-Christina Aguilera
Put Your Records On-Corinne Bailey Rae
Survivor-Destiny's Child
It's My Life-Bon Jovi
I Don't Wanna Be in Love-Good Charlotte
Stronger-Britney Spears
Single-Natasha Bedingfield
Girls Just Want to Have Fun-Cyndi Lauper
I Gotta Feeling-Black Eyed Peas

Backstabber Skewers

Food:

I say do one of two menus. Either all red and black food or mock the love idea. Broken heart cookies, sour candies, anything cooked with lots of garlic, that sort of thing. One really fun idea is to let everyone create their own skewer to grill. Set up bowls of meat, veggies, and fruit and let people creat their own skewers. Call them backstabbers for an extra bonus.

Activities:

Try a hockey game for a fun activity

So lest you think this is a true hatred of love, (because its not, just a chance to mock a little and have some fun while single) here are some positive options.
If you’re throwing an all girls or all guys party, consider getting out of the house. Catch a movie or a sports game. For a movie, go with a comedy and of course try to stay away from anything that is more of a couples style event—like dancing. For a coed party consider more team games. A little competition is always fun.

By the way I got that favorite shirt of mine at this website. http://www.cafepress.com/MusicBlend/7032611
