2009 Portrait Choice Awards as voted by YOU!
By Angela Lee, (22, Australia)
2009 was yet another big year full of many talented performers, both new and established. Summing up what made the year 2009 in popular culture with 432,145 votes in total, we present to you the winners of the 2nd Annual Portrait Choice Awards!
Movie of the Year: New Moon
As with Twilight in this category last year, New Moon won by a landslide in our Movie of the Year category again this time around, winning 47% of the 28 800+ votes. If we thought the Twilight saga mania last year was massive, it certainly stepped up a level in 2009! Fans fiercely debated the merits of Team Edward vs Team Jacob (Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob even poked fun at this fangirl debate when he hosted an episode of SNL (Saturday Night Live last month!), and also expressed passionate opinions about new characters such as the Volturis and the Wolfpack. The cast were constantly hounded by papparazzis and endlessly gracing covers of magazines, so is it any surprise that they kicked major butt to take out the Movie of the Year title in our Portrait Choice Awards? We think not!

And let’s face it – it takes a talented actor to bring a much loved novel character to life on the big screen and induce fangirl hysteria, and Rob’s portrayal of sparkling, brooding vampire Edward Cullen who sacrifices happiness to protect his one true love, does exactly that!

Best Female Movie Performance:
Emma Watson in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
It was big year in cinema with much anticipated films such as the latest instalments of Harry Potter and Twilight hitting the big screen in 2009. There was some stiff competition between the two when deciding what exactly were the favourites when it came down to these two films. In the case of Best Female Performance in a Movie, while New Moon managed to dominate many of the other categories in the Portrait Choice Awards, in the end Harry Potter’s Emma Watson managed to hold out on her own, winning with 34% of the 23 500+ votes for her magical portrayal of Hermione Granger!

Best Female TV Performance:
Leighton Meester in Gossip Girl
Everyone likes a good girl, but let’s face it – the more edgier and slightly more nastier girls always make for interesting characters! Case and point – how Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf overtook golden girl Serena Van Der Woodsen to become the show’s leading female. Yes everyone likes an edgier and not so wholesome character, but that being said, people prefer if she still had some redeeming and sympathetic qualities about her. Blair Waldorf is all that and more! She’s witty, smart, yet sassy and calculating. She’s hilarious when she’s hysterical, yet sympathetic when vulrenable, and it takes a lot to make all that work in just one character! It’s for that reason that Blair Waldorf’s portrayer, Leighton Meester, has taken out our Best Female TV Performance title in this year’s Portrait Choice Awards, winning with 19% of the 22 000+ votes!
Blair Waldorf – Keeps Getting Better Fanvid:
Runners Up: Selena Gomez in Wizards of Waverly Place, Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana.

Best Male TV Performance:
Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl
Who would have thought after watching the Gossip Girl pilot that Chuck Bass would be the character that all the girls would fall in love with? It seemed impossible considering all the devious behaviour we witnessed from this spoilt little rich boy! Yet as the series grew up on, we began to fall for this smooth talking yet manipulative ‘bad boy’ and soon grew fond of his inappropriate comments. But let’s face it – it wasn’t the bad boy antics that drew us in, but the rare softer side that Chuck Bass showed when he truly cared about someone in his life. Who wasn’t swooning when he was being all sweet and tender to Blair? But that didn’t mean Chuck Bass lost his edge – he still showed that he was as narcissistic as ever at times. It is the ability to make us laugh one moment then want to cry the next, or to make us want to yell at him one moment and hug him the next, that shows just why Ed Westwick has won Best Male TV Performance in this year’s poll, taking out 24% of the 19 200+ votes!
Chuck Bass – Scream Fanvid:
Runners Up: Ian Somerhalder in The Vampire Diaries, Jensen Ackles in Supernatural.

Breakthrough Female:
Nicole Anderson in JONAS
Your favourite new female face for 2009 was JONAS’s Nicole Anderson with only 1% separating her and 2nd place! In the end, Nicole won with 22% of the 13 900+ votes. Fans of Nicole may recognize her from guest roles on shows such as i-Carly, Hannah Montana, Zoe 101, and Unfabulous, but it was her role as the hilarious Macy on JONAS that really had viewers sit up and pay attention! Considering she has a few projects outside of JONAS up her sleeve, we’d say that the Breakthrough Female title is well deserved!
Runners Up: Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries, Lea Michele in Glee .

Breakthrough Male:
Paul Wesley in The Vampire Diaries
Your favourite new male face for 2009 was The Vampire Diaries’s Paul Wesley, and as with the female category, there was only 1% separating Paul and 2nd place! Paul won with 26% of the 12 800+ votes. Believe it or not, but Paul has been in the industry for quite some time now, having guest starred in an extensive list of shows such as Everwood, Smallville, and The O.C., so it’s great to finally see Paul break out on his own! And if his passionate fans are any indication, this talented actor won’t be going anywhere any time soon! Runners Up: Sterling Knight in 17 Again and Sonny With a Chance, Sam Witwer in Smallville .

Best Scene in a TV Show or Film:
Jacob in the rain in New Moon
Oh that infamous scene that made fangirls go wild when they saw the trailer! It also signalled just why the Twilight fanbase are so divided between Team Edward and Team Jacob! ;) Was there really any competition in this category - Jacob silently emerging in the rain took out 41% of 15 500+ votes and won by a landslide! Much like the lack of words from Jacob in that moment, we can’t think of any more words to express your love for this scene, so that pretty much sums it all up too!

Best Female Character [TV/Film/Book]: Jane in New Moon
It may come as a surprise for some to see Jane take out the top spot with 22% of the 16 500 votes, but with her fierceness is it really any wonder?
