Do the (Red) thing

By Rebecca

If you’ve been anywhere near a mall lately, you are sure to have seen something having to do with the (RED) campaign. Whether it is a red shirt saying INSPI(RED) or a red Motorola Razor, it seems that everywhere you look, someone is promoting this campaign. Unfortunately, not too many people know exactly what the (RED) campaign is, and why it is so important that everyone play their part and get involved.

(RED) was formed to create awareness and raise money for The Global Fund. The Global Fund donates 100% of its money to create support programs in Africa. They focus mostly on helping women and children. When The Global Fund receives a donation from (RED), they use the money to help people affected by HIV in various countries such as Swaziland, Rwanda, and Ghana. HIV and AIDS is a growing epidemic in Africa. By donating money to this cause, you are helping to save a person’s life. HIV and AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease, which can cause serious illness or death. In fact, HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death in Africa.

How exactly can you donate to (RED)? Many companies and celebrities have teamed up with (RED) to raise awareness. Every company that creates a product for (RED) places the (RED) logo on the item. The brackets on the logo represent “the embrace.” These products are referred to as PRODUCT (RED).

Tons of your favorite and most recognized brand names are proud supporters of (RED). These companies and brands include Motorola, American Express, GAP, Giorgio Armani, Converse, IPod, Hallmark, Dell, and Windows Vista Ultimate. Through the help of these companies, you can pretty much have a whole (RED) wardrobe! As well as companies and brands, websites, magazines, and other types of media are getting in on the action too! MySpace and AIM are both sponsors of (RED). This campaign also has many “friends.” Some of their “friends” are Facebook, the Vail Film Festival, the 2006 Hotel Café Tour presented by MySpace and (RED), the FADER, the Tripwire, YouTube, Good Magazine, and NEED Magazine.

Besides products, there are also a number of celebrities and athletes who are helping to raise HIV/AIDS awareness by partnering up with (RED). Of course there is Bono, who helped create the (RED) campaign as well as Bill Gates and Michael Dell. Many celebrities have posed wearing (RED) tee shirts from the GAP. The lists of celebrities include Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Penelope Cruz, Mary J. Blige, and Dakota Fanning, and that’s just the beginning! More and more people are working to help promote this great cause!

The next time you’re out shopping and you see a PRODUCT (RED), stop and remember what a great cause your donation would be going to. Besides getting a new product, buying something from the PRODUCT (RED) line will help save someone’s life.
