Just an American Teenager By Angela Lee (Age 21, Australia)
“So far I haven’t looked for it[criticism about portraying a teenager pregnant at 15], so I haven’t received any criticism. The role has been challenging in some sense, because this is my first role where she’s basically sad and lost in tragedy but still a teenager, still excited about school dances, and she has a new boyfriend and she’s finding love for the first time. So it’s a bunch of different colors that I kind of have to put into one rainbow, so it’s been fun to figure out,” said Shailene during a conference call in July.
As well as being a role model for young girls out there, 17 year old Shailene also supports a few charities including the Ronald McDonald Organization and the National Elizabeth Glaser AIDS Foundation, but inspired by her own fortunate upbringing, Shailene would love to start her own charity to help others. “I want to start an organization that allows families who are unable to go on vacation, I want to provide them with money through an organization to be able to let them go on vacation. I’ve been fortunate enough my entire life to go on one vacation a year, whether it be to Mexico or on a cruise or something, and a lot of my friends never had that opportunity. I think it’s important for kids to be able to have that one time a year where they can get out of the jungle of life and be themselves,” she said.
Shailene has also appeared in various television shows such as “Crossing Jordan” and “My Name is Earl”, but what fans may best recognize her from is her role on “The O.C”. as the original Kaitlyn Cooper, during season one. When Kaitlyn returned in season three, Shailene had been replaced by actress, Willa Holland but “The O.C.” creator, Josh Schwartz had nothing but praise for Shailene who originated the role.
Shailene has been acting since the age of five, and describes her foray into acting as an “accident”. “I’m not even entirely sure how it happened. My cousin used to be a model and one day brought a talent-call audition thing with her and my mom was like, “Hey, you want to act today?” and I was like, “Sure!” And it just kind of happened. I was never forced to do it, and I never forced them to take me to auditions. It was just kind of one of those things that worked for everybody,” she said during the conference call.
“I’ve been acting for almost 13 years, and it’s just been my hobby. My friends went to soccer practice; I went to auditions. So I’ve never really thought of it as a job or something that my life could be created after. It’s just been something that I have an immense passion for,” she said.
In her spare time Shailene enjoys trying out new things and has been parasailing, bungee jumping, and stunt flying. She is also very creative and enjoys activities such as sewing.
“I love to make bags or shirts or dresses or whatever. So I do a lot of sewing, and my best friend and I actually—she’s an amazing photographer; she wants to be a fashion photographer when she’s older—so we’ll go to the mountains or whatever and we’ll take pictures and I’ll pose for her so she can get a portfolio together. We’re just very creative. We like to go around and make things out of random scraps of anything.”
“I’m a senior in high school. It’s such a great point in my life,” she said. “I’ve had to figure out how to juggle my job and my school and my friends. I don’t want to miss out on a thing at this age.” Shailene attends Simi Valley High School and has attended public schools her whole life, juggling it with acting. Education is important to Shailene – whose father is a school principal, and mother a school counselor - and one day she wants to attend university.
But for now those plans will have to go on hold, as a second season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager is due to start airing in January. Can Shailene give us any gossip as what to expect? “Lots of drama,” said Shailene in an interview on the red carpet with TV Guide. “It’s triplets...quadruplets actually,” she jokes.
