Shia Labeouf: The real Shia

Shia Labeouf is not Sam Witwicky. Shia Labeouf is not Indiana Jones. But you already knew that. The thing is, Shia Labeouf is also not Shia Labeouf. That line has been one Shia has repeated a lot in recent weeks. See, its easy to realize he’s not Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford has worn the title for decades and Shia isn’t taking it over. Sam Witwicky, his character in the Transformers movies might be a little more similar.

After all neither Sam nor Shia can close the deal on a date. (Hey, his words, not mine.) Though the end of June saw tabloids once again linking him romantically to both of his gorgeous ‘Transformers’ leading ladies, Megan Fox and Isabel Lucas.

The real trick is the two Shias. There’s the Shia Labeouf that we all love. This is the kid who grew up on Even Stevens (the only Disney Channel show to win an Emmy by the way), made a movie about Holes in the desert into a massive favorite film, and suddenly morphed into a

serious actor and movie star with a matter of two movies, “Transformers” and “Disturbia”. He’s the twenty something star that wears a suit to his interviews and dates the hottest star of the day. But that’s Shia Labeouf. The celebrity.

The real Shia Labeouf still acts like a 23 year old. He likes skeet shooting, dirt bikes and motorcycles and recently listed Mortal Kombat, Doom, Donkey Kong, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario Kart as his current favourite video games. He’s happy to spend a day in front of the TV. He loves the movies he’s done in part because they were great opportunities for him but a lot because they were just “bad-ass”.

Or in his words, he is a professional schizophrenic. A man who not only plays so many different fictional characters but is having to play them in real life as well.

His role in a new Indiana Jones has been recently confirmed. He is the full blown star of the movie too, no hanging on the back of Harrison Ford’s motorcycle. His upcoming roles in “Money Never Sleeps” and “The Associate” may wind up being very important though. There’s rumors circulating about Shia being considered for ‘The Social Network’, the upcoming film about Facebook and then there’s the directing. Shia’s directorial debut music video, ‘Minds Awake’ by Rumspringa recently debuted and was soon followed up by the Cage music video ‘I never knew’, in which Shia made a cameo appearance.

The early reviews of his latest movie, the highly hyped “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” are in. If you’re made of metal, moviegoers and critics alike agree. Fantastic. Awesome. Amazing. And if you’re Megan Fox, you have a scapegoat. Girls and guys like her for the envy factor, some want to look like her and more want to be with her. Even she admits to that being her primary role in the Transformers movies. The rest of the humans are out of luck. From eleven year olds to fifty year olds, the best part of Transformers are the Robots.

It’s a fact that is good and bad for Shia. On the plus side the movie grossed 16 million dollars in midnight showings alone and a grand total of 60.6 million on just the opening day. And machines or not, Labeouf is the star. Studios like money. But if he wants to prove his worth and longevity, he’ll need moviegoers to walk out of a film loving him, not the robots. I for one, have faith that he can do it.
