The Sound of Music

Gwen Stefani is back with the single ‘Wind it Up’, which features a sample of the song ‘Lonely Goatherd’ from the 1965 musical The Sound of Music.

"It was a dream of mine to put The Sound of Music to a beat, because it's my favourite movie," Stefani said in a recent interview.

Gwen isn't the only one who loves the film. It's been a personal favorite of mine since I was five years old and I'm sure I've seen it at least a hundred times in the last fifteen years.

The Sound of Music is a true classic. In 1965 it won the coveted Oscar for Best Picture. It also won Oscars for Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment, and Best Sound. The film was also nominated for another five Oscars, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Julie Andrews.

At the time of it’s release Sound of Music became the most successful film of all time and held that title for many years after it’s release. In fact, up until recently, the film still ranked in the Top 100 films of all time in the Domestic Box Office.

Sound of Music propelled it’s young star, Julie Andrews, into the worldwide spotlight. British born Andrews was 29 at the time of filming Sound of Music. At 71, she still acts today, having recently been seen in the films The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement as well as voicing the Queen in Shrek 2.

Filmed on location in Salzburg, Austria, and Bavaria, Germany; the film is visually stunning, perfectly capturing an era long since past.

The film tells the story of Maria, a young woman living at an Abbey and preparing to say her vows and become a Nun. Maria, however, does not seem suited for life in the Abbey and is assigned the task of serving as Governess for the Captain Von Trapp and his seven unruly children. At first, the job seems to much for Maria but when she shares her love of Music with the children things begin to turn around. Things get complicated, however, when Maria finds herself falling in love with Captain Von Trapp, who is engaged! Also taking place is the invasion of Nazi troops into Austria. The Nazi’s wish for Captain Von Trapp to join forces with them in their Navy, a fate worse then death to the Patriotic war hero.

Don’t let it’s age fool you, Sound of Music is a timeless and beautiful film that you’ll never forget. If you haven’t yet seen it, you must check it out.
