Ten Books About Mystery
By Marisa C (Age 19, USA)
Like me I love a good twist and a story that can get our attention from the go and take us on a journey that we will never forget. Some of these great books do just this and just when you think you may have guessed what is happening you are quickly proved wrong which just makes it even more exciting.
First up is A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly.
Set in the year 1906, sixteen year old Mattie wants to go to college and pursue her dream of becoming a writer. Whilst taking up a job as a waitress in a hotel in order to earn the money to get her to college, she is shocked by the death of one of the guests. Someone who she had encountered early on when she gave Mattie some letters that she wanted burned. Based on a true story, Hattie is soon caught up in the mysterious murder and finds the determination she needs in her life.
The Uninvited by Tim Wynne-Jones follows Mimi Shapiro who’s glad to get away from university after having a terrible first year there. Her dad offers her to stay in his cottage but when she gets there she is shocked to see that someone else is already living there, a young man named Jay. He soon starts to accuse her of leaving threatening objects in the house, but as Mimi has just arrived it can’t be her. It’s fast-paced, eerie and guaranteed to keep you gripped until the end.
The Ruby In The Smoke is the first book in Phillip Pullmans brilliant Sally Lockhart’s series.
Main character Sally begins a journey in 1872 to find the truth behind her father’s death. With a whole host of villains out to stop her and friends that are behind her, she soon discovers more then just what happened to her father. It will keep you hooked from start to finish and you will be wanting to stay with Sallie and discover her other adventures in the book series.
