Graphics Tutorials: Colorization
By Yiota (Age 20, Greece)

In our brand new Graphic Design Tutorials series, Yiota brings you great tips on achieving both simple and complex graphic design techniques in Photo Shop.

This month: We are going to achieve this:
PS: please don't try this if you have problems with your nerves. You are going to spend a lot time on this if you want a good result.

1. Open your picture. For the tutorial I chose an easy image (that mean doesn't have many details) and it took me around 10 minutess. Select the Pen Tool as shown in the image below.

2. Now start making a path around the parts you want to add colour too (one part at a time).

3. I start with the skin as you can see. At the face don't forget to close into paths the eyes and the lips. It's important if you don't want them have the same colour as the skin. You must do that with every part even when it is inside a part you wish to colour.

4. Right click on the picture and Make Selection.

With these settings.

5.Now Image--> Adjustments--> Hue/Saturation. Check the Colorize preview and play with the settings until you find the colour you want.

Here is the colour I picked for her skin.

6. Do the same with all the parts of the picture you want coloured. My finished picture looks like this.

Attention: The current picture was easy.
Picture like that (with very little detail to be coloured) take me over an hour: Avril Lavigne Bandaids: The #1 Avril Lavigne Picture Gallery - From Black/White to Colour (yiota)/colorizeforceren You can see Avril's jacket is weird. That means you had to make paths for every button and everything else. Also you can add filters on ur pics to look better. But that's not nessecery. For any question just PM me.
