Friendship is always being there.

When One Tree Hill first started, Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer were best friends and Haley James (Scott) was just an outsider. It took Haley entering “their world” to meet them and even then it was awhile before Brooke and Haley became friends, but when they did, they bonded for life. Throughout the years, if there’s one thing that’s been constant, it’s the way these two have each other’s backs and give each other unconditional love and support. In season three when Haley and Nathan were having marriage problems, Brooke made it her mission to make sure Haley didn’t brood at home in a funk, in return Haley encouraged Brooke to start her own clothing line when she was having relationship issues with Lucas. When Haley and Brooke got married, they were both the maid of honour at each other’s weddings. Brooke is also godmother of Haley’s son Jamie, because Haley knew ‘Aunt Brooke’ would always be there for him, and that proved true several years later when Jamie was in a car accident and Brooke risked her life to save him. Now Haley and Brooke are business partners and run Karen’s Cafe together.

9. Alex & Harper [ The Wizards of Waverly Place]
Friendship is about the good times.

If there’s one thing that these two are known for, it’s the crazy things that they get up to! Whether it be Harper getting super enthusiastic over something or Alex coming up with one of her crazy schemes or the girls accidentally landing themselves into trouble or some other magical mishap, there’s never a dull moment with these two. Just like all friends, sometimes these two fight but when making up, they’re not afraid to embarrass themselves all in the name of friendship and it makes for good laughs afterwards!

#8. Elena, Bonnie & Caroline [ The Vampire Diaries]
Friendship is protection and sacrifice.

During the first season of The Vampire Diaries, we saw how great of friends Elena and Bonnie were and how great of friends Bonnie and Caroline were, but rarely how close the three of them together were, despite being told that the three were good friends. (Okay sometimes Elena and Caroline were frenemies but that’s besides the point.) Namely, this might have been because they were keeping supernatural secrets from each other, but that all changed in season two. Caroline was finally let in on the supernatural secrets, and even had supernatural dramas of her own when she was turned into a vampire. Such dramas and secrets have the capacity to tear friendships apart, but in this case it has made the friendship between these three girls stronger. We’ve seen them become powerful and independent, yet human enough to lean on each other through the hard times. Time after time this season, these three have put their lives on the line to save each other, not worrying about the consequences, even if it meant sacrificing themselves. It’s clear that the foundation of their friendship is their desire to protect each other at any cost and that’s why we adore them so much.

#7. Damon & Alaric [ The Vampire Diaries]
Friendship is not what you say but what you do.

It’s funny to think that Damon and Alaric really did not like each other when they first met, yet fast forward roughly 18 months later and they’re one of the greatest bromances on TV! From what we’ve seen these guys don’t have many other friends, but they’ve got each other so who are we to complain? Damon and Alaric steer clear of getting touchy feely but we can see the way they care for each other in the things that they do – whether it be knowing how the other is feeling without them actually having to vocalize it, the undertones in their banter, sitting side by side at the bar and not having to say anything, or partnering up for missions. Let’s hope the bromance never ends!

Friendship is being each other’s family.

These two might have been knocked from the top spot this year, but let’s think of it as mirroring the hardship these two have gone through during their relationship. The bond between Dean and Sam runs deeper than being brothers, they’re best friends and more. These two have literally been to hell and back on numerous and separate occasions, and it’s taken one to bring the other back, because at the end of the day no matter how brave they try to be, they can’t live with each other. Through everything – even when they’re estranged or at odds, they are each other’s salvation and nothing can change that.

#5. Aria, Emily, Hannah & Spencer [ Pretty Little Liars]
Friendship is sticking together.

Aria, Emily, Hannah & Spencer are a close knit group that were estranged for a while, but found their way back to each other and since then their friendship has been stronger than ever. Although it was tragedy that brought them together, it’s true friendship that keeps them holding on. In times of crisis, it’s easy to distance yourself from others or lash out. Yet no matter how much the mysterious ‘A’ tries to throw at them, these four friends are determined not to let A win or turn on each other. True friendship is sticking together through the good times and bad, and these guys have definitely endured plenty of bad!

#4. Rachel, Kurt & Mercedes [ Glee]
Friendship is about letting go of the competition.

During Glee’s first season Rachel Berry didn’t have many friends despite being in Glee club. Kurt and Mercedes in particular, weren’t exactly her biggest fans, but perhaps that was because they were all more similar than they thought – they’re all talented and have big dreams. Luckily in season two, they’ve all learnt to embrace their similarities and have become good friends, even going to each other for relationship advice and having sleepovers. It brought smiles to our faces when we saw Rachel and Kurt team up and do the “C’Mon Get Happy/ Happy Days” mashup, and when Mercedes and Rachel had their friendly diva-off moment during “Take Me Or Leave Me”. It was great to see the girls not let Sue get the better of them when she tried to turn them against each other, and seeing Kurt and Rachel dream about their names in lights in Broadway when they went to New York had us dreaming of a spin off (or a show on Broadway)! We’d love to see these guys in their own show that’s for sure!

3. Brittany & Santana [ Glee]
Friendship is about being true to yourself.

If there’s one thing that stands out to us in this friendship is how honest and accepting they are with each other and how they’re comfortable with truly being themselves when it’s just the two of them. Santana may be a tough-talking chick and not ready to come out just yet, but she’s not afraid to break down and tell Brittany that she loves her. Brittany in turn accepts this even if she can’t understand why Santana can’t see just how awesome she really is and that she shouldn’t hide that. Also notice how Santana never puts Brittany down for her not-so-bright moments, when even Artie – the one person Brittany thought would never do that to her did. At the end of the day, no matter what their relationship status may or may not be, it’ll always come back to Brittany and Santana.

Friendship is about two different halves making a whole.

Carly and Sam just missed making our Top 10 last year, but have skyrocketed from #11 to #2 position this year! We live seeing the different things these two bring out in each other – crazy Sam encourages straight-laced Carly to live a little and have fun, while responsible Carly is the voice of reason that keeps Sam in line and stops her from getting into too much trouble. That being said, there have been times where Sam’s good intentions backfire and she ends up in a hot mess that Carly has to save her from. There have been times where Carly’s taken the blame for Sam’s antics, but if your best friend doesn’t do that for you, who will? Despite their contrasting personalities, one thing they do share is their fierce loyalty to each other - if you mess with one, you’re messing with the other!

Last year, Miley and Lilly, along with Oliver took out 5th position in last year’s poll and this year Miley and Lilly have zoomed up to take the top spot! It was a sad day when the last Hannah Montana episode aired because we’ll miss seeing all the mischief that Miley and Lilly get up to, but we’ve gotten so many laughter and tears from these two in the past four seasons that we’re glad that we can look back at them with fond memories. If there’s anything this show has shown, it’s that the friendship between Miley and Lilly goes beyond friendship. These two aren’t just best friends, they’re also sisters and even beyond that! Through the good times and the bad, these two have come out stronger than ever. And if you can’t pass up filming a major movie with Tom Cruise in Paris for your best friend, who else can you pass it up for?
