2010 Top 10 Coolest TV Fathers as Voted by YOU! - Portrait Magazine, September 2010 Issue

2010 Top 10 Coolest TV Fathers as Voted by YOU! By Ang Lee
(Age: 23, Australia)

They drive us nuts with their attempts to be cool and frustrate us with all their rules. But they’re always there to lend a hand when something’s broken or good to have around for a second opinion when mother says no. Whether you’re daddy’s little girl or a case of like father, like son, fathers play a big part in who we are today. So in honour of Father’s Day in parts of the world this month, we celebrate all things father-like and bring you our 4th annual Top 10 Coolest TV Father Figures as voted by YOU!

**NOTE**: Portrait recognizes that Father’s Day falls during different times of the year around the world. Obviously, we can’t accommodate for every period it falls for, so we have done our best to accommodate as many countries as possible.

#10. Nathaniel ‘Baze’ Bazil [Life UneXpected]

Baze & Lux

Being the father of a teenager girl is tough work. Being the father of a teenage girl that you’ve only just met is tougher! Especially when you’ve never been one for much responsibility in your life and then one day wham bam! No more cruising through life because your long lost daughter has shown up on your doorstep and it’s time to step up to the plate and be a man. Debuting into this year’s top 10 is one of the newer dads on the block is Life UneXpected’s Nathaniel ‘Baze’ Bazil, father to 16 year old Lux. If there’s anything that Baze has proven as a father, it’s that it’s quality not quantity that counts. Sure he has unconventional parenting methods like taking his daughter out to carnivals on a school night, or bribing a classmate to take her out to get her out of her funk, but his intentions always come from the heart. Considering Baze’s history with his own father, Baze’s parenting skills are a great testament to the man he is – where possible, there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his daughter.

9. Tom Scavo [Desperate Housewives]

Tom Scavo

He’s the father of six children – Kayla, Porter, Preston, Parker, Penny and the newborn baby girl - and has been on our screens for six years, yet this is the first time, Tom’s been able to crack into the top 10. Tom’s the cool dad that tries to keep up with what’s hip with his children. He’s the good cop to his wife Lynettte’s bad cop, often letting his children get away with trouble that his wife would usually punish them for. He’s a bit of a dreamer and proves to his children that you shouldn’t be afraid to chase those dreams. In serious situations, Tom does step up to the plate and does whatever he has to do to protect his family.

#8. Eric Taylor [Friday Night Lights]

Eric Taylor

Jumping up two spots from last year, this TV dad is leaving his final year in our top 10 on a high. For the last fours years we’ve seen Eric be a devoted and protective father to not only his daughters Julie and Gracie, but been a surrogate father to the many troubled young boys on his football team over the years. Players such as Brian ‘Smash’ Williams, Tim Riggins, Matt Saracen, and Vince Howard can attribute that the fine young men they have grown up to be is a testament to Coach Taylor’s constant guidance, wisdom and support. What we love about Eric is that despite the pivotal influence he’s had on so many young lives, he’s no means a softie – he’s your typical tough, gruff male and that makes us love him even more!

#7. Harry Wilson [90210]

Harry & Dixon

He may have slipped down four spots from last year’s poll, but principal of West Beverly High and father to Annie and Dixon is still a pretty cool guy. He tries not to embarrass his kids at school too much but at the same time isn’t afraid to enforce some discipline if needed. Harry’s not afraid to protect his children, even if it means to do a bit of sacrificing, as shown at the end of season two, when in order to protect his son Dixon, and save him from getting into some serious trouble, Harry stood down as principal after being blackmailed. No one ever said parenting was easy, but if you love your kids enough, the sacrifices are water under the bridge and worth it.

#6. Robby Ray Stewart [Hannah Montana]

The Stewart Family

Keeping steady in sixth position again this year is father of Miley and Jackson – Robby Ray Stewart. Robby adores his children and can go from being a big kid who embarrasses his children one moment and a protective authoritative figure the next. His kids may think that they’re smarter than him at times but don’t let that fool you – Robby Ray is smarter than he looks and prefers to let his children come to their own conclusions rather than him coming up with answers for them.

#5. Burt Hummel [Glee]

Burt & Kurt

All it took was just a few episodes for Burt Hummel to become one of the most adored parental figures on TV! It hasn’t been easy for Burt to deal with his son Kurt’s sexuality, but despite it all his love and support for his son never faltered. He may not understand his son, but he’ll do anything protect him and ensure that he’s happy. Burt has also been a father figure to Kurt’s friend Finn, who also happened to be the son of his girlfriend, and all was going well until Finn made a derogatory remark about Kurt. So Burt put his son’s welfare first and kicked Finn out of the house, not caring about the implications it may have for his own relationship. Being a parent isn’t about teaching your child how to learn from their mistakes, but also learning lessons from your child and the fact that Burt is so willing to do that, further cements why he’s one of the best TV dads out there right now.

#4. Homer Simpson [The Simpsons]

Homer Simpson

He’s lazy, ignorant, hilarious, sarcastic, forever eating, and a lovable fuddy duddy. By no means is he perfect and is probably not the best role model for his children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, but despite his craziness he really does love his children and has the best intentions for them (most of the time) and that’s what counts at the end of he day. Moving up three spots from last year, Homer has had a strong presence in our Top 10 for the past four years. He also has the longevity of being one of the world’s most adored characters for more than 20 years, so we’re sure he has the staying power to be one of our top 10 TV dads for many years to come!

#3. Jerry Russo [The Wizards of Waverly Place]

The Russo Family

Rising two spots from last year is father to Alex, Justin, and Max, Jerry Russo. He may have given up his magical powers so he could marry his wife and start a family, but that doesn’t mean that Jerry isn’t proud of his heritage and eager to pass it down to his children. While he wants them to be great wizards, he also teaches them about responsibility and not to be too reliable on them. Being a good parent is about helping shape the people you want your children to become but also let them learn their own lessons.

#2. Rufus Humphrey [Gossip Girl]

The van der Humphreys

Steady in second place again this year is Gossip Girl’s Rufus Humphrey, father to Dan and Jenny, and stepfather to Eric and Serena van der Woodsen. As far as fathers go, Rufus has a pretty casual approach to parenting. He respects his children and values he’s instilled in them while growing up, enough to let them have a lot more freedom to explore life than most parents would. That being said, he isn’t afraid to play the authority figure card when he thinks they’ve gone way too far in the wrong direction, as we’ve seen with his daughter Jenny. No matter how disappointed and frustrated he may get at his kids’ actions, he’ll always be there with open arms and a shoulder to cry on when they realise the error of their ways and coming running back to him.

#1. Nathan Scott [One Tree Hill]

Nathan & Jamie

For the third year in a row, Nathan Scott has taken out the top spot in our top 10 coolest TV fathers poll and it’s not hard to see why. Nathan’s a young father who is determined to protect his family and be a good role model for his son, Jamie. When a scandal but him and his family in the spotlight, Nathan did his best to shield his son away from all the attention. When his wife Haley went into a depression after her mother died, Nathan did his best to protect Jamie from the severity of the situation so that he wouldn’t worry his poor little mind out. When making career choices, Nathan always considers not just how it will affect him and Haley, but also how it will affect Jamie. And unlike many parents, Nathan isn’t afraid to goof around and have fun with his son just to make him happy. With a second child now on the way, we have no doubt that Nathan will be just as much of an amazing father to them, as he is to Jamie!
