Haley Ramm

Acting career

Start-how-
I'm from Dallas, Texas and when I was 6 years old my dad picked up a flyer for an acting school and asked if I wanted to try it. Of course, I said yes! I always liked to perform! I had danced since I was 2 and even figure skated for a while. The acting teachers suggested I talk to an agent and the first agent we met signed me! I auditioned for and booked commercials and short films. My first national commercial was for the very first FurReal Friends cat! I had so much fun and knew I wanted to be on set all the time. For years I begged my parents to let me try and make it in Hollywood. Finally, when I was 11, they thought I understood the sacrifice that the whole family would have to make for me to go to California. I came out with my mom and I booked roles on Yes, Dear and CSI and some commercials. Since I did so well at the start they decided that we should stay. I'm so glad they did!

Best parts/worst parts-
The best is making a character come to life and getting to change who you are for a while! The worst is a 6 am call time!! I love to sleep late.

What future projects can we expect you in?
I just booked a great role on the TV show Without a Trace. It will run sometime in May. I play a bad girl so that should be fun! Into The Wild will be out in December of 2007. It was directed by Sean Pean and stars Emile Hirsch from Alpha Dog, Lords of Dogtown and The Girl Next Door. I filmed my 2 scenes in Portland, Oregon. I play the younger version of Jena Malone's character and Emile's sister. My ER and Grey's Anatomy episodes just ran so look for the re runs!

Coolest celeb you’ve met-
Don't make me choose! Dennis Quaid who I worked with in Yours, Mine and Ours was cool. Jodie Foster is VERY cool. Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan from X-Men: The Last Stand were beyond cool. Sean Penn was very nice. I met Jennifer Aniston when I did still shots as her character in Rumor Has It and she was so sweet to me. And I can't forget Shane West from ER and Justin Chambers and Kate Walsh from Grey's.

Person you want to work with
Shia LeBeouf and Meryl Streep. Can I name two? Who are your role models and why?
Oprah and anyone who gives so much of their time and efforts to charity. What message to you want to pass to people through acting?
I think it's important to choose roles that have real depth. I want people to feel something when they watch me. When I worked on Grey's Anatomy my mom and I discussed the character (who is a teen who throws her newborn into a high school trash can) and we decided that if this role could touch one girl who was in that situation and make her see that there were other options than it would be a worthwhile role to play.

Nicest thing a fan has said.
I'm surprised that I get emails from people all over the world. I got one today from a girl in Iran! I hear from kids in Malaysia and Australia and anyplace the movies have been released on DVD. I can hardly wrap my brain around that. It's very sweet. They almost always say I hope you get some big roles. It's so nice to have people cheering you on!

Most embarrassing moment with a fan.
Fortunately, I haven't had one yet!

How do you balance your acting career and your regular life?
Acting is really a part of my regular life. Instead of going to soccer or basketball practice I go to auditions. And when I'm fortunate enough to book a role-to work.

Weird reactions from people about who you are?
I think it's funny that people who weren't so nice to me when I was in school in Texas are now nicer. That's weird because I'm the same person.

Have money and success changed you at all?
I love to shop for bargains! I don't think that will ever change!

What’s your favourite thing about fame and success?
I love to act and if fame comes with it that's great. I want to be known for my roles. I hope I will be even more successful with my acting.

Ever wish you could disappear for a while? No! I love my life.

Do you miss your family a lot when you’re away filming?
When I first moved to LA, I lived away from my dad and brother for 3 years and that was really, really hard. When I am out of town filming my mom goes with me but I always miss my dad and brother.

What’s your trailer like?
It depends on what I'm filming. Big productions have really nice trailers with TVs, showers, microwaves, video players. If it's an indy film or lower budget film everyone goes into it knowing that they are not going to be in big trailers.

How does it feel to be a role model of so many people out there?
I'm not sure why actors are role models. There are so many people in the world who do so many great things-teachers, parents, doctors-they should be our role models.

What advice would you give upcoming actors?
Never give up! If you get to audition for a role then you should really listen to the feedback from the casting director and keep trying to improve. Take classes and work hard.

What’s the key thing to success (in your opinion)?
Never stop trying. When one door closes another will open.

Films

Best moment
The first time I ever walked onto a movie set.
Worst moment
No worst moments!
Most embarrassing
Having to wear the nude suit when I was filming ER.
Weirdest
The messy paint fight in Yours, Mine and Ours. We had to keep putting the same wet clothes on day after day. It was disgusting.
Crushes
Do you think I'd tell??
Favourite person
I've been blessed to work with lots of people I consider favorites.
Similarities in characters
I have usually played a nice girl and some of my characters have problems but the audience is sympathetic to them. Young Jean Grey had some serious issues!
