Jean-Luc

Okay, so you’re a regular on the hit TV show “Kyle XY.” Can you tell us a little bit about the show?
Kyle XY is a show about a boy who was found in the forest without a belly button, covered in pink goo and he was a creation. He wasn’t like you and I. He didn’t have a belly button so he came from … I guess his pod thing. He was found in a forest and a fellow named Tom Foss rescued him from his company and dropped him off in this forest and so from there he was put into like a penitentiary because he was walking around Seattle naked, which is obviously against the law.

He was put into jail and my mom in the show, played by Marguerite MacIntyre, she is a social worker for youth at risk, and she worked with him, and decided to bring him inside the Trager family home. I play Josh Trager and I play like his little brother. So the show grows with Kyle and he can go from a little baby pretty much to a full grown man. And he’s a genius. The show is about his growth and his mystery and he’s kind of a superhero.

So he’s an alien covered in pink goo whose actually extremely smart and likes to run around naked?
[laughs] yeah

Nice. So what’s your character Josh like?
Josh is very mischievous; I’m going to call him the comedic relief of the show. He’s a funny kid; he gets himself into a lot of trouble with his parents and with Kyle. He always tries to get Kyle to do really stupid things and get Kyle into trouble. He probably has the funniest lines in the show just because he’s so bratty.

So are you anything like him?
Good question. I’m the same age as Josh in real life so yeah we are alike in a lot of ways but there are differences.

So are you bratty?
[laughs] I guess so, sometimes.

Have you ever had any embarrassing moments on set?
I’ve had plenty. I like to scare Matt Dallas. Matt Dallas plays Kyle. I like to hide behind things and jump out and scare him. So I’m not even the one that gets all the embarrassing moments, I think it’s him, ‘cause I’m always trying to scare him. I’ve had some pretty embarrassing times, I guess. Most of them I think happen when I don’t know what a word means or something on set and I say it differently and Josh is a really smart kid so sometimes I’ll get like a line or a word or whatever that I don’t understand and I’ll say it and it sounds really stupid because I don’t know how to. I usually get made fun of whenever I do that.

So the perfect gift for you would be a dictionary, huh?
[laughs] yeah

So what drew you to the show? What made you want to be part of it?
When I got the audition for the show, I wasn’t able to read the script or anything, I just read Josh’s lines so I did the audition and I did a really good job I guess. From there I went on to LA to do the second audition where I did it in front of a group of 30 people which was pretty…

Nerve-wracking?
Yeah. I met all the producers there. I didn’t really pick the show among others, I just went out for the audition, I did well, and then later I got it. I don’t think it was until after I booked the show I got to read the script. But after I got it, I realized what a good show this was and it drew me in more.

Do you think it could ever happen in real life?
Yeah. Oh my god.

So you’re currently filming the third season?
Yeah we’re filming the third season. I think we’ve been booked for 10 episodes this season so we’ll be shooting that ‘til about the beginning of August.

Have you read the script for season three?
We get scripts about a week before we start shooting them, and it takes about 7 days to create an episode, not including weekends. We get the scripts before each episode, so I’ve read only one script in advance, so the mystery is still spewing in my brain as much as the fans.

So moving on, you’re also taking part in ‘Spectacular’. Can you tell us about that?
Well I have a really small, part. I auditioned for a couple of the leads, but due to the show I couldn’t do them, not to say I would’ve gotten a part anyway. I got a call from my agent a couple of weeks after I did the audition for Spectacular and they said that they offered me just a small part as an auditioner for the Spectacular group. So I play a really nervous auditioner who tries to sing the “Star Spangled Banner”. I had to learn the “Star Spangled Banner” for it. It was a good experience, I was nervous as hell since I’m not much of a singer.

Nice. So is it sort of like High School Musical?
It’s like High School Musical but more of like a real tick to it. They don’t break out into musicals wherever they go, you know.

Jean-Luc

So less cheesy?
Yeah. They’re actually part of a show choir and they do competitions. They don’t just start singing.

So it’s more like ‘Bring it On’ meets singing.
Yes, thank you. it’s just like that.

That’s pretty cool. Who’s your favorite cast member from Spectacular, even if you had a small part?
think my best friend Ryan Solls. He played part of the dancing crew. He became an actor just recently. I was so happy for him. I knew some of the other cast members, they’re great and everything, but I think I have to put it down to my buddy Ryan ‘cause he just got the part and I was so proud of him.

That’s awesome. In general, in everything that you’ve filmed, have you ever had a crush on any of your co-stars?
[laughs] Oh my god, so another actor?

Yeah. That was a knowing laugh.
Yeah, okay. I guess for Kyle XY I had a crush on Merritt Patterson who played Ashley in the first season. In episode four of the first season, we got naked in a hot tub together in one of the scenes. We had to go pretty close. I thought she was great. She was really cute. Never mind, she was hot. She was really hot.

You got naked in a hot tub?
Yeah. I was in a Speedo like a really skin tight Speedo. That was my first time wearing a Speedo.

Hopefully the last time too. Speedos are like against the law!
Yeah. [laughs]

So who would you most want to work with in the future?
Wow, that’s a hard question. I’d say my top three favorite actors would be Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis, what’s his name again? Um Iron Man.

I can look it up if you want.
No I know it. I can’t believe I’m forgetting his name. This is ridiculous. Oh Robert Downey Jr. One of those three. Johnny Depp has been a favorite of mine since I was a little kid. Robert Downey Jr. I liked him in all the stuff he’s done, but just recently he’s engraved his name into my brain because Iron Man was so well done. Daniel Day-Lewis is so amazing all around and if I got to work with him I don’t know how happy I would be. It would be a good experience.

Tired? Is it early in the morning there?
Oh can you hear my yawn? I’m sorry.

No it’s fine. It is like 9:00 in the morning there isn’t it?
Yeah I’m just a teenager.

Well I feel your pain. So how do you balance your acting career and your regular life?
It’s pretty simple. I work about 5 days a week, so I get to hang out with my friends on the weekends. It’s pretty simple. Sometimes it gets a little hard cause it’s long hours or late night shoots or something. Just last week we shot past 2 am everyday during the week. So sometimes it gets pretty hard to keep up a personal life, but acting gives you the chance to excel in both your personal life and in your career, and that’s what I like about it. I live in an apartment in North Vancouver. I actually live in Siri, a suburb of Vancouver. It takes me quite a while to get from north van back to Siri. It’s kinda hard to keep up a personal life sometimes, but It’s for the work which is good.

Not too bad. I’m sure you want to go sleep after last week’s shoot.
During a week like that you don’t really catch up from for another couple of weeks, so I’m still trying to regain my sleeping schedule.

Aww I’m sorry this interview is so early.
No, no it’s okay. There’s no problem.

Do you ever have to deal with fakeness and figure out if people are talking to you because of who you are or if because they actually like you as a person?
It’s pretty simple to figure out. If someone comes up to me and starts talking to me and I can tell they’re just on to me because I’m off the show or whatever and they’re not much of a fan, they’re just like a person. I don’t really know what you call it. But usually when someone comes up to you and they’re acting pretty fake, you can ask them about the show and if they don’t know anything about the show then they’re obviously lying to you. Whenever someone comes up to me and goes “oh my god you’re so great. Everything you do is just this and that.” Once they say that kind of thing it’s like “oh you watch the show?” And then I’ll ask a question about the show and I’ll ask them what they thought of this scene or something. So it’s pretty easy to pick out the fakers. The fans are great. They come up and they’re really humble and like “oh my god. Can I have a picture with you?” kind of thing.

Does it get annoying? It’s not great having random people coming up to you and trying to be your friend even though they don’t like your show or they’re just trying to be famous or whatever?
It doesn’t happen much. In Canada the show’s not really big. We’ve got some sort of following but it’s pretty much only in the States. There’s not many people that come up to me or try to do that kind of stuff which is great.

Do you shoot in Canada?
Yeah we do.

So that’s useful for you.
it’s very useful. We shoot in north van so it only takes like 45 minutes to get there from where I live. 5 minutes from my new apartment so it’s great.

So what do you look for in a girl? Apart from being naked in a hot tub?
I guess you could say good personality and good looks I guess. I don’t want to sound shallow or anything but I think looks trigger up the whole conversation for the most part if you don’t know the person. So good looks and then like a good personality, funny, exciting, chill sort of. Not high maintenance is great.

Tell me about the best date you’ve had.
The best date would’ve been…I took a girl to the beach one day and we had dinner at this really nice restaurant on the beach. Then after we went and walked along the beach and went down the pier and everything and it was really cute and romantic, but it was, really cold and so we were both shivering and we weren’t really in winter clothing. We were actually dressed for summer. In Vancouver the weather changes whenever it wants to and it’s hard to guess whether it’s going to be cold one night or hot. So we were in summer clothing and we were really cold and it drew it closer I guess. That night I was actually supposed to ask the girl out but I didn’t end up doing that because I chickened out. But it was a really nice date. It’s pretty romantic taking a girl to the beach at night and having dinner with her.

It sounds really romantic
. If I have to give any advice, guys take her there.

Jean-Luc

Are you romantic then as a person?
I think so. I learned a lot of stuff from the show because my character Josh becomes quite the mature kid and he gets a long relationship with a girl and learns to be romantic and a good boyfriend. I’ve learned a lot from the show in that sense. So I can be romantic.

Describe yourself in three words?
Oh my god. No, not those three words. [laughs] I’d funny, outgoing, and three would be… I like to party. I don’t know what you’d call that.

Wild child or party kid. I don’t know.
Yes wild maybe. Not really wild, but maybe like…

Fun?
There you go, thank you.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
New Zealand, of course! No, there’s a lot of places I would travel to, but I’d like to go to Egypt and travel into pyramids and stuff. That stuff really interests me.

Are you a history geek?
No not really. In fact, I didn’t even take history in high school.

What are your hobbies apart from acting?
I like to play video games. Me and my roommate, Chris Olivero, he plays Declan on the show. We are living together right now, and we don’t really do much when we’re not working, just play games and work out and chill and eat. I don’t have many hobbies; I should really pick up on some. But currently, not many.

What video games do you play?
Well, most of them are rated Mature. I play Grand Theft Auto, all those crazy games, some racing games. A lot of them have to do with killing which is horrible, but they’re the most fun so it’s not my fault.

If you were stuck on a desert island with only three things, what would they be?
Toilet paper.

You mean you wouldn’t use leaves?
No, toilet paper for sure. Maybe like a cell phone and maybe my computer. And I’m hoping that I’d get internet connection so I could go on Facebook and what not.

So you’re a Facebook/Myspace addict.
I am.

What do you find more boring than watching paint dry?
I shouldn’t say baseball…maybe not baseball. Watching golf…no golf is not too bad. That’s a hard question! You know what, watching golf! That is boring.

It is. It’s so good playing it but watching it is just death.
Yeah, playing it is awesome, but watching it is terrible.

What’s the most disgusting thing you’ve had in your mouth?
I really hate stuffing. I really hate that. It drives me absolutely insane. I’ve only eaten it twice in my whole life. I did not like stuffing.

That bad, huh?
Yeah. There’s probably much worse things, but stuffing, I just remember that taste and begging for napkins. It was not a fun experience.

What’s your secret addiction?
My secret addiction would probably be… racing. I like going fast.

Do you drive?
I drive, yeah. I love driving fast. Yeah, that’s my secret addiction probably.

What was your nickname in school?
A lot of people called me Johnny in elementary school. That was cool for a little bit. Then it kinda turned into, on set, Matt Dallas I walked into the trailer one day and he just screamed out “J-Biddy.” So I caught onto that a lot, so people started calling me J-Biddy. Then my buddy Stew mentioned J-Swang. So I think my latest nickname is J-Swang.

What irrationally annoys you?
I think little kids annoy me a lot because they cry and stuff. I can’t stand when babies cry so they annoy me…Babies and just annoying people.

What’s your most treasured possession?
The robe I’m wearing right now, my house robe. Probably the ugliest thing I’ve ever put on. It’s beige and black and it looks like something Hugh Heffner would wear. This is just ugly. I’m glad I don’t wear this out.

So why is it your most treasured possession?
I think my most favorite treasured possession would be maybe my car or my Xbox 360.

Have you ever heard any weird rumors about yourself?
I’ve heard plenty. One of which, this is funny , that I was cousins with Matt Dallas, who plays Kyle XY. I have no relation to Matt. He’s from Phoenix, I’m from Canada, so it’s not like we have any family close together. I don’t know where they got that rumor from. But we don’t look anything alike, so I don’t know how they put those two together.

Do you have a Myspace or somewhere where fans can add and talk to you? There are about 25 of you on Myspace.
I had a Myspace for a while I deleted it. It got really annoying. I didn’t really want to change my profile and do all that stuff and I wanted something easier. I have Facebook. But I don’t have one for like fans and stuff. I have one just for friends. But I’m going to get on making a facebook for fans pretty soon I think.

Do you have any fan mail or somewhere where that fans can contact you if they need?
I have a website, it’s JLbillodeau.com. I think that’s what it is. I have to still like make it and add a bunch of stuff. I’m just really lazy.

Wow lazy, that’s wonderful.
Yeah, fans can still email me through there and I’ll see them all and everything.
