 Nat and Alex Wolff |
So let’s start with the basics. Please introduce yourselves and say a little bit about yourselves.
Nat: Hey! I’m Nat Wolff
Alex: And I’m Alex Wolff
Nat: I’m eating a banana right now and that’s pretty much all I can think about…but apart from that, my favourite things to do are to write songs, act and play basket ball.
Alex: I’m awesome…that’s all you need to know! I’m just kidding! Um…
Nat: He’s not a very interesting person…
Alex: I love playing drums, I love music, I love soccer…
Soccer is awesome! What position do you play?
Alex: Forward!
Ah! I play defense!
Alex: Are you a shin kicker?
No!
Nat: Defence is probably the only thing I could do…and I don’t even play soccer! But I’m definitely a shin kicker…
Alex: Strikers tend to call defense people shin kickers…
Nat, what position do you play in basketball?
Nat: I couldn’t be in the league this year because I messed up my wrist right after we finished our tour in the fall. Last year, we got to the finals but we lost. Hopefully I’ll be in the league next year!
So what happened to your wrist?
Nat: Right after we finished our last show in LA, we were wrestling and thank God I didn’t do it before the concert! Anyway we were wrestling and this 200 pound guy jumped and I put out my hand to stop him and he came down right on my wrist. It was a freak accident!
So lesson of the day…don’t wrestle!
Nat: Yeah but we still wrestle. We did a concert over the weekend and we had some seriously awesome wrestling matches.
Is that what you do backstage? Wrestle?
Nat: Yeah that’s how we get ourselves pumped up!
Do you have to stay fit for the tour?
Nat: I had to get in such good shape because during the shooting of our TV show, we get so out of shape since we never work out. When I did the tour, I had to get my breathing in order, my singing was there although I took some singing lessons as well, and I had to work out every single day. I did 45 minutes of running, weights, push ups, sit ups etc. I can’t do push ups anymore because of my wrist but I’m kinda happy about that…I hate push ups!
Alex: I just sat and watched him do it and laughed.
Nat: When our band members do push ups, Alex just sits on them and has fun!
Which is your favourite song to perform?
Nat: Occupy. We go absolutely ballistic during that song! I have this insane energy and I spasm around. It’s like a seizure on stage! I was always really sore the next day. It’s just crazy.
When you did the tour, did you have a tour bus?
Nat: We went to school during the week and did the tour on the weekends, so we mostly got to venues by aeroplane or car. It was really funny actually, because we were at the airport in LA and you have to put everything metal in a special bin and we consider Alex metal (heavy metal) so we put him in the bin too!
Going to school during the week…that’s balancing two worlds isn’t it?
Alex: School sucks.
Nat: I got used to it. At the beginning it was very difficult to keep up with everything. Once you get used to it, it’s great because we only have the shows on the weekends so you have something to look forward to. It just got very busy.
Alex: I don’t know about Nat but I still haven’t gotten used to it and it’s still hard.
Nat: Doing the tour was much better than just doing regular school! Touring is one of my favourite things so it kept me going during school. Now I just go to school like a regular kid. We do all the music-related things on the weekends. Other than that, it’s school every day, apart from a couple of weeks that we’ve missed. I think it’s way better than being home schooled, even if it’s harder.
Do people treat you differently in school, because of what you do?
Nat: We had both been going to the same school since kindergarten, but I switched schools this year, but my new school is more flexible with that kind of thing.
So Nat! You got nominated for a KCA! How did that feel?
Nat: It’s so exciting! I’ve gone twice before and both times we’ve had something cool to do! The first time we presented, the second time we performed, and now I’m nominated!
Are you guys planning to do another tour soon?
Nat: Well like I said, we do weekends. We’re doing scattered shows. It’s more erratic. During the fall, we had a set tour but now we’re just doing random gigs.
Apart from music, you also have your own TV show. Can you tell us a bit about it?
Nat: The TV show is about a band I was in when I was younger and my mum filmed a mock documentary about us. It started off like a fake documentary about a rock band, and then kids took it as a real rock band because all my real music was used. We pretended we were as big as the Beatles and kids assumed we were! We just finished our third season, which was fun.
To clarify, the Naked Brothers Band doesn’t exist?
Alex: Well it kind of does now…
Nat: It’s all my best friends when we were young before the show came on.
Alex: When the show came on, us being rock stars came true
Nat: We had a band called Silver Boulders, with all the same kids that had all my real songs. Then in the movie it was written that we formed the Naked Brothers Band and we used all the real songs so that’s what it became. It did become a real band.
But when you’re performing, it’s just you, the Wolff brothers?
Nat: Yeah
Alex: And the band…the grown-up band
So what do you call yourselves?
Nat: Just Nat and Alex Wolff
Is Wolff really your last name?
Nat: It is actually! Isn’t it awesome?
Alex: I prefer tiger…
Nat: I was thinking of changing my name to Nat Llama or Nat Zebra or something…
I’d go for llama…So your new episode, Naked Idol is coming out March 14th. What’s it about?
Alex: Nat’s “girlfriend” Rosalina goes out with this guy named Michel and he’s a classical pianist, and Nat meets him and they get into a fight. You have to watch and find out the rest. It’s dedicated to our grandma who died 2 days ago. Also Rosalina quits and we have to find a new bass player…
Was it fun filming a fight?
Nat: It was so much fun! I got to fight a guy who’s actually in our band!
Are there any new songs in the episode?
Nat: there are two new songs. One is called The World As We Know It Today and we have Rosalina which is really old from when I was 9 years old.
How many songs have you written??
Nat: I write about 30 songs a year, since I was 7 years old…
Do you write lyrics and then add a melody or the other way around?
Nat: the best songs come at the same time. Sometimes I’ll write lyrics and then write a melody to the lyrics, or sometimes I’ll have one line of lyrics and a melody together and then write a tune around it, or I’ll have an idea for a title and write a song based on that.
You must need a lot of inspiration…
Nat: well I write about anything. I love bananas and so there’s a song called Banana Smoothie! You have to listen it! I get a seizure on that song too!
Anyway it’s time for (more) random questions!
If you could be superheroes, who would you be?
Alex: I’d be the guy who has all the superhero powers
He doesn’t exist!
Alex: Well, I just drew a picture of him so he does exist! He can run fast, he knows how to fix problems, he’s tall and he’s sexy…
What’s his name?
Nat: Ghandi!
Alex: Metal Man…no wait! Canada dry! Or…belated birthday man!
Nat: Anyway…I’d be Batman because he doesn’t have any cool powers…he’s just one bad dude!
Batman has no powers!!
Alex: Exactly…batman’s a loser
Nat: Yeah but superman doesn’t have to work at all…Batman takes out guys with his soul!
Alex: Oh let’s call my superhero Anti-Man!!!
Nat: Anti-Hero!
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Alex: I’m going there! Italy!!
