Romeo

You’re an actor, a singer and a basketball player! Do you ever get time to be a regular guy?
I’m also still in high school. I just finished my last class for the day. It’s always in my mind to be a regular kid as much as possible. There are a lot of celebrities out there that pass up their childhood and they end up going crazy. I’m always trying to be a regular kid. I go to the movies, I hang out with my friends etc…

Do you people ever recognize you in the street?
Everywhere I go, people notice me, but I’ve been expecting that my whole life because I’ve seen how people react to my dad. When people started noticing me, I went like “uh oh…” When I was in 3rd grade, these girls started chasing me…back then you’re not into girls so it was really shocking! I didn’t know what to do! But as I’ve grown up, I’ve learnt to deal with it and I love my fans! That’s why I do this! For my fans!

Do you ever have to figure out who’s your true friend or who’s your friend because of your fame?
That’s the first thing you have to realize. Once you hit fame, you’re going to have people coming out of everywhere, claiming that they’ve been supporting you through it all but you have to remember your family is number 1. Your family has been there for you since day 1. I have a very strong family bond.

Which of the three above would you say you’re more involved with?
I’m actually pretty involved with everything. It makes a big difference if you’re involved. When I got into the music industry, I said “I don’t only want to be a musician…I want to be the president of a big company, I want to learn everything that people do to make the music. With acting, I said I wanted to be a director as well; I wanted to know how to edit and work the camera. With basketball, I want to be a coach as well; the person who knows all the rules. I think in everything, I have to have some input. With my clothing line for example, I didn’t want to just be a model; I wanted to put my own personal style in it.

Are you working on any current singing projects?
I just did a song with Akon called “Get Low With It” and it’s for my new album which is coming out in August called High School Romance. Then I did three movies that you will see next year. I did a horror movie, a movie for the album called High School Romance and a football movie. I also have a new clothing line I just finished for females which is coming out at the end of this year. And finally I have a basketball scholarship in USE so I’m preparing to go there for my basketball. I’m just trying to do everything.

After your album comes out, are you thinking of touring with it?
Yeah I’m going to try, depending on basketball. When I go to college, I’m going to concentrate on basketball and school work but until then I’m going to do a lot of promotion. I am definitely going to see my fans before I go to college.

When you go to college, is acting and music going to be put on hold?
The reason I chose USE was because I will be able to continue pursuing my acting. I’m going to be going to film school so I’ll be learning more about the behind scenes. I’m going to be learning and be a regular person. I’m not stopping everything…I’m just slowing down.

Out of all your acting projects, which was your favourite to film and why?
My favourite was the horror movie, which is called “Pig People” and it’s about this local myth that went on in Louisiana about these half human, half pig creatures. I’ve never been on a set of a horror movie before so just to see the horror monsters in person…it was crazy! We had to live in the woods for 3 weeks! So basically without cell phones etc but it was fun because everybody bonded.

Did you get freaked out?
Oh it was really spooky! The girls got really scared! I got a lot of hugs that day!

Have you ever had any embarrassing moments on set?
I’ve had loads! One time, my jeans were too big but I had to wear them because otherwise we would have lost 3 hours till we got new ones. In the scene, I had to run. My pants fell right off in front of everyone! Everyone saw my lucky boxers…guess they weren’t that lucky that day…

You’ve worked with some beautiful women. Ever had a crush on them?
I’ve had a lot of crushes…I think that’s why my parents named me Romeo. I’ve worked with so many beautiful women in videos, movies etc…I end up with a crush on them…I won’t say any names though…

Are you currently single?
Yeah I’m single. I’m looking for the perfect girl…I have the glass slipper…I just need to find Cinderella…

Do you live up to the name Romeo? Are you romantic?
My name wouldn’t be Romeo if I didn’t live up to it! I’m definitely romantic!

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve done for a girl?
If you’re at a bar, some guys send girls drinks. Well I was in the aeroplane so I sent a girl some peanuts with a note. She really liked it! Of course I’ve done the classic romantic stuff like a filled a bed with roses and treated her to a candle light dinner and a walk to the beach and singing her a song…but I think the peanuts was more romantic.

What’s the worst chat up line you’ve ever used?
I only say it to see the girl’s reaction. Me and my friends say, “Did it hurt?” and they ask what and we say, “when you fell from heaven!” I just use them to make the girl laugh!

Tell us about a moment in your life when you just wanted to give up.
It was at the point where I just started my career; I was 11 years old. My song had been number one for 10 weeks. There were paparazzi everywhere. I flew to London and had to do interviews in a room for 5 hours straight. It was really hard for an 11 year old. It was overwhelming. At the same time, one of my favourite artists, who I really looked up to got in an aeroplane crash. I was just so shocked and it made me think whether I wanted to do this or not.

What made you decide to continue?
Two words…my fans. I had a concert that night and they were screaming my name, telling me they loved me and telling me that I gave them hope and inspiration…I want to be inspiration to people and change lives…
