Name: The 5 Browns
Gregory: Not at the moment. While we love to listen to all sorts of music, our love for classical goes much deeper than any other kind of music, and I don't really see that changing anytime soon. One huge reason for that is because we've spent most of our whole lives thus far training and bettering ourselves as classical musicians, and we feel like we can best express ourselves through this music. "Classical" is actually a very broad term though, because there are many pieces within the genre that have elements of other genres, and we love playing classical pieces that include flavors of jazz, Latin, and sometimes even rock. So, for now at least, we'll stick to our true passion...we love what we do.
Gregory: Actually, I'm really looking forward to possibly going to China in the near future. For some reason, I've become really kinda of obsessed with the culture, and I've even started trying to learn the language. I took a semester of Chinese over last summer, and it's coming along all right. Another cool thing for us as pianists to go to China would be the fact that there are millions and millions of kids there studying the piano (probably more so than in any other country right now), and since one of our main goals is to bring classical music to younger kids, the piano boom that's going on in China would be very exciting to be a part of.
Ryan: Well, all of us are really in to Coldplay right now. We also really like Kelly Clarkson, U2, Kanye West and 311. We all watch MTV all the time and we really like listening to almost all music. This is the age of the Ipod, everybody has a little of everything including classical in there library.
Ryan: Yes, we have heard so much about this but because of our crazy schedules we haven't had much time to catch up on the all the TV shows we have been wanting to watch these past few months. We are hoping that maybe during the summer we could maybe start watching the show because we hear very good things about it. It's filmed in Utah, and we have heard of the specific character. We understand why he wants to go to Juilliard -- because it's the best!
Desirae: Some of us have dabbled in composing, and we definitely had to do composing assignments at Juilliard, but none of us really feels like it is our strength. So for now, we leave the composing and arranging to the professionals.
Desirae: On average we each try to practice 4-6 hours a day. If there's a serious deadline it's more like 8 hours or more a day...we usually try to avoid that though.
Deondra : We each remember being really excited to start our piano lessons at the age of three. It was a strange coming-of-age thing in our family, and we each really took to it. But, for every kid who works hard at something, there are almost always parents behind the scenes helping to encourage and push them forward. There comes a time, though, that each kid, usually somewhere in the teenage years, must really decide if this is something they want to pursue on their own, apart from their parents. It can no longer be something that your parents want you to do, it MUST be something YOU want. We each came to that decision on our own in those same teenage years, and the crazy thing i s that it was each chose to continue and make this our life's mission.
Deondra -- We started out with only one piano, but as more of us came along and the hours of practicing increased, we gradually upgraded to FIVE... yeah, we know, sounds a little crazy... Anyway, we HAD to because there just weren't enough hours in the day for all of us to get the practice time we needed. We were having to get up at ridiculous hours, and even still we couldn't get all the hours we needed!! We never had to deal with any sibling rivalry, but if the five pianos hadn't been there, I imagine there would have been an AWFUL lot more arguments!! We really do get along well, and only find our selves in real arguments in our practice sessions together because we each have such passionate musical opinions.
Melody: I have to say that one of our favorite pieces on the album to play, record, and film was Stravinsky's "Firebird". There's just something about this piece that really gets to all of us. I mean how can it not when we're constantly reminded of what it felt like to play out on the Bonneville salt flats while filming the music video, surrounded only by an almost infinity of white salt and the most beautiful sunset you could ever imagine! Something hit me out there...it was one of those moments in life where the greatest music and the greatest scenery was combined to create a sort of atmosphere that transcended this world. So if you see the music video you can kind of catch a glimpse of all of this and hopefully feel a tiny bit of what was so overwhelmingly powerful at that moment in our lives!
What would be the highlight of your careers so far?
Melody: I have to say one of the craziest experiences was walking out on the stage of a concert in Idaho to a crowd of 4,000 screaming college students! Never before had we ever realized that we weren't the only ones who were open to and love classical music. How amazing it was to give people another option in music...there's no reason for this great music we play to become lost in a world of pop. There's room for everything in this age of the Ipod!
