The Honest Life: Adam [foreground] on Vocals, D [background] on guitar.
Kelly: Can you start by introducing yourself to Portrait Magazine?
D: My name is D, and I play guitar in The Honest Life.
What's the story behind your band name, "The Honest Life"?
D: We chose the name The Honest Life because we wanted to choose a name that reflected our music. Our lyrics are very specific to what we go through in our lives and the area we live in. We really try to put ourselves out there on the edge and be honest with ourselves and let people take it how they see it.
Kelly: Who mainly writes the lyrics for The Honest Life?
D: Our lyric writing is really a combination of the 2 of us. I put the ideas in Adams head of what to write about and he comes out with the actual words he wants to use to convey that.
Kelly: Where do you guys record?
D: We record with our long time friend Craig Sheets. We grew up in the same city as he did. He is a few years older than us so we spent much of our early years as musicians looking up to his band. So it's really cool to get to be working with him this far down the road. He really takes a personal interest in making us sound as best as we can because of our longtime friendship.
Kelly: Awww, that must be great to work with people you are so close to.
When did you first pick up a guitar?
D: I got a guitar for Christmas in 8th grade. My older sister had started dating a guy who played guitar the summer before that. So he was always over at my house with it jammin, and I just got hooked.
Kelly: You've been favoring the rock genre more then acoustic lately. Any plans on doing more rock songs in the future, or will you stay forever an acoustic band?
D: We are actually going to be release 2 sides of our EP- the acoustic version and rock version. Our live show will still stay acoustic, at least for the time being. But we wanted to give our fans another taste of what we are into. If down the road people were interested in joining our group we'd definitely think about doing our live shows as a full rock band. But we're not particularly planning on doing that just yet.
Kelly: Acoustic + a little bit of rock- Best of both worlds. I love it.
Speaking of live shows, can you remember any live show catastrophes?
D: Hahahha at one show we played the PA was broken. The guitar would work, but it would cut out when Adam started singing. So in all the parts that Adam was singing, he was all you could hear. And whenever there was a instrumental break the guitars would come back in. That must have sounded so silly to the crowd. So like halfway through the set we just ditched the mics and just played right to the crowd acoustically.
Kelly: Thanks so much for taking some time on this D, you sound like a busy dude.
D: I have a graduation party to go to, then a date with homegirl to go see Wall-E.
Kelly: Awesome! That sounds like fun. Thanks again for your time =)
