I'm here with Tom and Jake who are two young and talented musicians from England, making their mark on myspace music! Hey guys! Can you please introduce yourselves?
Jake: well...I’m Jake
Tom: and I’m Tom and together we are Tom and Jake, or Jake and Tom, however you want to look at it
Jake: We've been playing together for about 3/4 months
How old are you and where are you from?
Jake: I’m 15 and from Darlington
Tom: I’m 16 and from Aycliffe village
What got you into music?
Tom: my granddad started teaching me guitar in year 6 but I never took it seriously till bout 2-3 year ago
Jake: Basically, my dad played guitar and from a young age I wanted to. At 5 I started playing classical guitar, and from 8 I started playing drums and about 10 I started piano. Just in the last about 2 years I have started playing electric and acoustic guitar.
Tom: when I started going to a music school called the school of rock and pop which showed me how to play write songs. That’s also where I met Jake.
How did you decide to form a band?
Tom: basically when we left the school music classes
Jake: we just said, “fancy playing some acoustic songs and stuff?” then went from there to make out our own.
Tom: And one thing led to another, and we’ve got about a set of 7 songs written
How did you decide which genre to make music in?
Tom: well I had influences from bands I like, some indie bands like The Enemy and Kooks but then I also listen to pop punk bands so when you listen to some of the songs you can hear influences from these genres
Jake: Yeah, and I like acoustic songs so I wanted to write stuff like that really.
Who plays which instruments in your songs?
Jake: I sing and play guitar and piano, and in recordings, drums
Tom: I play guitar and bass but I also write the guitar parts mainly, whilst Jake does more lyrics
Why should people be encouraged to listen to your music?
Tom: You don’t get many young song writers who want to create music appealing to all ages, which we feel like our music caters for. It has a universal appeal. No matter who you are, you can find or relate to the songs we write
Have you played any gigs?
Tom: Well one of the main reason we got together was because Jake’s
Dad got us a gig as a warm-up act for a Beatles tribute band at Darlington arts center, which was our first set. We had to learn bout 14 songs and we wrote 'indigo eyes' for that gig in 2 days so it was quite an achievement!
What was the gig like?
Tom: Full of middle aged women dancing around to the Beatles but for our first set it was quite alright!
Jake: And we got paid £50 for it
Is it important to you to become famous?
Tom: It’s not the money although that is like appealing but it’s more so being remembered for the songs you write! Also I really want to play in big stadium venues like Newcastle metro arena!
Jake: I’m not really sure; it’s not about money, but it’s always nice. It’s mainly about just playing in front of thousands of people, which is what I’ve dreamed of since a kid.
What are your hopes for 2008?
Jake: More gigs
Tom: To get noticed by someone famous who can help us make it big, such as say McFly offered us to go on as a warm up act for them… That would be cool but other than that, more gigs
Jake: Tom is in love with McFly
Do you go to a professional studio to record your songs?
Tom: well Jake has a studio in his house… Jakes a bit of a whiz on all the stuff so
I basically help and plug stuff in.
Eleni: You're "the plug bot"
Tom: Yes, sadly I am tom the plug bot
So what's the recording process like? Is it difficult? Long? hard?
Jake: Pretty easy because I’ve been doing it since I was young
Tom: not really, it’s just that Jakes a perfectionist so we have to record stuff a billion times
Who are your inspirations when you work? [I already know tom's answer to this]
Tom: McFly are legends. I was watching there live DVD and there just as good recorded as they are live
Jake: For me, I’d say James Blunt, James Morrison, people like that. Also the Kooks but mainly James Blunt
Tom: Really I aim to be the same live and recorded cause playing live is what been in a band is all about
What is your process of song-writing? do you write the music first, and then the lyrics?
Tom: Both at the same time or like on 'Memories' I wrote the lyrics, then went round Jakes
Jake: Not really, sometimes we'll have a riff, then put lyrics to it, or maybe have lyrics and put music to it
Tom: and we basically recorded it straight off. Jake just sang and I made something up on the guitar. It’s one of our main songs now.
Where do you see yourselves in 10 years?
Tom: Playing to lots of people across the country and having a name for ourselves. Also having a bassist and a drummer, so we can make our set more lively get people dancing! Oh and of course to meet McFly
Can you imagine doing anything else, but music?
Tom: not really
Jake: probably not
Tom: since I’m not very good at anything else
So you guys are going to stick to it till you succeed?
Jake: yeah
Tom: the way I see it, I’ve got another 6-7 years to get famous before I need to get a job
Jake: but as we said, its not all about being famous and rich
Tom: just as long as I meet McFly then life will be good
Say one line from any of your songs that describe your emotional situation right now
Jake: 'its time now...to say goodbye' emotional because someone I cared about was leaving so it was a sad moment. Its describing saying good bye to people you care about.
Tom: sometimes i don’t write lyrics bout how I’m emotionally feeling cause when you think bout it, they can be quite depressing and sad. So I imagine little stories about people and write about them.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Tom: America because I loved it when I went on holiday there, but the place I’d love to go is London so I can play Wembley stadium
Jake: Yeah but Greece for holidays!
Tell me a random fact about each other
Tom: Jake is a bit of a chav [English slang]
Jake: No I’m not! My friends are! Tom loves McFly (cough) wussy (cough)
Tom: And we are really good dancers, as u would have seen if you went to my college’s battle of the bands
What is the most embarrassing you’ve ever done?
Tom: There’s so many! At secondary school in a school performance for parents,
I ran and jumped up onto the stage and my trousers fell down in front of about 300 people!
Jake: I was doing a school performance and introducing acts, and walking off I fell over the curtain!
If you could do anything for one day, what would you do?
Tom: Be in McFly
Jake: Play in front of thousands of people
Where can people listen to your music?
Tom: on myspace
Jake: http://www.myspace.com/tomandjake or come watch us at a gig
Tom: You can download our songs off myspace and send them to your friends!
