John Mayer: Continuum - Review by Kat
|
After taking time out to form the Blue's group 'John Mayer Trio' Mayer is back with a new edge to his music but every component that first made us fall in love still present.
The first single 'Waiting on the world to change' doesn't so much touch on the political as the state of democracy and each persons part in changing the world to be a better place. (It's hard to beat the system/ When we're standing at a distance/ So we keep waiting/ waiting on the world to change). The song has a great groove and showcases a different edge to Mayer's voice.
Mayer takes on guitar legen Jimi Hendrix in his cover of "Bold As Love" intentioned to introduce a new generation to the song and the artists music. Being one of the aforementioned I can't comment on the contast between the original but I'm certainly a fan of the cover.
My person favorites from the album include the emotional 'Stop this Train', a track about growing older and how you sometimes feel the desire to stop the train and go back, the beautiful and uplifting 'Heart of Life' - a song John says is for everyone, no matter what they're going through, and 'Gravity' a mellow blues number.
All in all 'Continuum' is a brilliant album and a must have for music lovers. My choice for album of the year.
