I wasn't in love with Jesse from the start, but this song made him way more likable. Why? The songs are upbeat and catchy-- and would make a great companion to his other album "Beautiful Soul", which mostly were ballads mixed in with some upbeat songs.
The album actually tells a pretty poignant, albeit "mixed up" story. If they rearranged the songs in better order to tell an actual "story", maybe it would have appealed to me a bit more.
The first song ( Anybody) is one of the many favorite songs I have on the album. Although McCartney is in a happy relationship, the way he sings the songs-- it makes you believe that in fact, he has had his heart broken one too many times.
If Anybody is the "you-broke-my-heart" R&B/Pop hybrid song with an addictive tune, then Blow Your Mind (the second track) is its Matchbox 20-inspired hit. It's not my favorite song on the whole album, and sounds a whole lot like Anybody-- but it's sure to be a hit with all the successful bouncy jumpy tween fans that McCartney already has.
Truthfully, the first four tracks pretty much sound like each other-- that's the only real problem that I actually have with this album. That most of the songs sound like each other.
The album slows its pace (thank god!) to refresh and pleasure us with Feelin' You and Invincible. Invincible should be treasured by McCartney, it tells a sad, depressing story of a friend talking about another friend's decision to drink and drive. Kids, listen to this song-- and get the point. Don't drink and drive!
The rest of the album, with the exception of his first single and the album name Right Where You Want Me, which deserved to be his first single, are a bit confusing to place in categories. They are upbeat, catchy, yet don't really fit the stereotype because they are songs begging for forgiveness? The last two songs, are probably my favorite songs on the whole album-- but maybe that's just me. Tell Her reminds me of Beautiful Soul (his freshman release), it makes me a bit sad. The song is bittersweet, and is a good second to the last song. But the closer, We Can Go Anywhere, is the best song to end the album. I'm in love with this song, the guitar solos, and Jesse's voice and the lyrics of this song. If you have to listen to this album, at least listen to this song.
This album isn't a sophomore slump, but it isn't a hit either. A lot of the songs remind me of each other. It has more hits that Beautiful Soul did (the only songs I liked on that album were Beautiful Soul, Because You Live and Take Your Sweet Time), but I do not like how all the songs sound so similar. But, it's a great album all in all. Listen to it, and give McCartney a chance.
