Miley Cyrus: The Time of Our Lives
Review #1 by: Amanda

When news of Miley’s EP (extended play, shorter than a regular album) was released, including the track list, she made sure to take to her Twitter and let her fans know they should “get ready for a change.” It’s a good thing she warned that this EP would be different. It doesn’t have such a bubblegum gum sound to it, and it’s great. Even if you don’t like a track or two, there’s no denying that Miley sounds her best yet.

“Kicking and Screaming” is actually a cover of an Ashlee Simpson song. A lot of people did not like the idea of Miley recording this, especially fans loyal to Ashlee or those who are used to Miley writing her own music. It is, however, a great departure from her usual Hannah Montana sound. The song is more rock than pop with a definite edge. It’s a great lead off track because it throws you head first into the disc, letting you know just how different her sound could be. And, I actually like her version better than Ashlee‘s.

“Party in the U.S.A.” was the first single released, and yes, it is that song. You know the one. The one she performed at the Teen Choice Awards. While it is similar to Miley’s style, being a pop song and all, it is much more sophisticated, musically, than her stuff has been before. It’s catchy, fun, and semi-autobiographical, telling the story of a girl making the move from Nashville to Los Angeles. You can’t listen to this song and not want to dance along. This song is also the background music for advertising for her new clothing line.

“When I Look at You” will be featured in the movie Miley spent the summer of 2009 filming, The Last Song. It’s a dramatic, emotional, ballad. I don’t think she sounds as good on this track as she does on the others, but the emotion in her voice sells the song. You can tell she really believes what she’s singing, she’s not just doing her job and recording the track, and that makes the song so much better.

“The Time of Our Lives” is actually a song that I don’t think I would usually enjoy. I usually dislike the pulsing of “club beats” and the use of electronic sounds in the background, but here it works. She actually sounds like she is having the time of her life while she sings, and it makes the song really enjoyable to listen to. Miley’s voice isn’t masked by any of the music she uses, so her voice sounds even stronger than it normally does.

“Talk is Cheap” has an intro that I could live without, but I love the song. The lyrics are a little more adult than anything Miley has recorded before, and she sounds fantastic. It’s another song that’s really catchy and really fun, but it’s also much edgier than “Party in the U.S.A” or “Time of Our Lives.”

“Obsessed” is another slower ballad. It’s definitely a contrast to the edgier sound of the faster tracks on the disc. The lyrics are great, telling a story about a girl who just can’t seem to stop thinking of that one person. It‘s not my favorite song on the album. I admit, I prefer Miley‘s voice on the more up-tempo tracks. She still sounds amazing on this song, I just prefer the other tracks.

“Before the Storm” (live with the Jonas Brothers) isn’t really a song I needed to hear again, but I’m glad Miley was able to put it on one of her CDs since I think she sounds so much better on the song than the Jonas Brothers do. The country/pop style really suits her voice, and it’s something she doesn’t do very often. I don’t usually like to listen to things that are recorded in front of an audience because the screaming gets to me, but Miley sounds even better on this song live than on the version recorded for “Lines, Vines, and Trying Times.”

I love this CD. It’s so much better than what she has released in the past. Miley Cyrus sounds amazing and she really took some creative leaps with her music. It makes me really excited to hear her next full length album (whenever that will be). The only downside here? The EP is available exclusively at Wal-Mart stores. This was done to coincide with the launch of her clothing line with Max Azria. So, if you don’t have access to a Wal-Mart, or their website, you’re out of luck (legally speaking). If you can, buy it. It’s definitely worth it.

Kicking and screaming
well, it's not my favorite in the album to be honest, but when I want to dance, I listen to it. I am used to Miley singing songs that are pop with a small hint of Rock, but this song is a more rock, now, I haven't listened to the Ashlee Simpson's version, so I cannot really say which one is better. But this one is good and I recommend it for parties

Obsessed
I think Miley should stick to fast up-beat songs, because in this song her voice doesn't sound the best, but it's a great song about a girl who thinks she is obsessed about her boyfriend, and trying to convince herself other wise, but she is only kidding her self. It's a great song, especially when it goes "...Is this the way it feels when you're in love, or is it something else...", I recommend it if you've ever had such an experience to cry a bit, and if you are in mood for slow ballads

Party in the USA
the fuss that this song made when it came out as a single makes you want to listen to it so badly, but I personally think it's overrated, I only like the chorus, and in this song, it feels like Miley still hasn't gotten over herself and is still singing about her life, which is annoying, but the song is good at parties, and it's really catchy.

Talk is cheap
the intro of this song isn't very much encouraging, and usually when I don't like the intro, I turn to another song, I really don't like this song... to put it in a nice way... it's not on my "most played" list, in fact it's below the "least played", but I may be a bit unfair to it.

Time of our lives
in this song, Miley's voice seems a bit "electronic", but I love the song, and it's one of my favorites, although, the message of it isn't very clear, and till now, I still don't know what is the message that Miley wants to send to the listeners, but it's a fantastic song anywho.

when I look at you
it's my favorite track, Miley sings it with so much passion, and you gotta love it, it's a slow ballad, so Miley's voice isn't the best here, but it's totally recommended to listen to, by the way, the song makes me feel "magical" if I am making any sense,:P

before the storm
featuring the Jonas brothers, I don't listen to this song that much, but my sister loves it, and keeps singing it, so I guess it's catchy, I just don't give it what it deserves

the album on overall
I think in this album, Miley is trying to prove that she isn't a kid anymore, I guess if it wasn't an EP, and had more songs, it would have attracted me more, but still, I always want to know what is this young artist is doing in her life, and that's why I bought this album, what my friends think about this album is "what is wrong with Miley?!!", maybe because we are all used to her Disney image, and it was weird listening to her sing such mature songs.
