Switchfoot's second secular release 'Nothing is Sound' supplies more of the thought provoking rock that won our hearts on their last album 'Beautiful Letdown'.
Though essentially a Christian band, any mentions of God are subtle and wouldn't be noticed by the critical listening not wanting faith pushed upon them.
The overall feling of the album is somewhat melancholy: 'Everyone dies, everyone loves a fight. Nothing is sound, nothing is right side right' but you get the impression this speaks of how the world is and not how it forever should or will be.
In my opinion the biggest beauty of Switchfoot's music is their lyrics. They flow together like true poetry and convict you with the force of a kick int eh stomach.
Highlights:
Happy is a Yuppie Word
'Happy is a Yuppie word. Bless is the man who's lost it all'
Easier then Love
'Addictive, bittersweet, clap your hands with the hopeless nicotine... Everyone's a lost romantice since our love became a kissing show'
The Blues
'It'll be a day like this one when the world caves in and the hungry and poor and deserted are found'
Politicians
'We are broken, we are bitter. We're the problem, we're the politicians. Watching for the sky to get torn apart'
Daisy
'Look up at the rain, the beautiful display of power and surrender'
Overall the album is a success and worth getting though I think 'Beautiful Letdown' is probably still my favorite Switchfoot CD.
