24 Girls in 7 Days by Alex Bradley

When Jack is turned down by his first choice for a prom date, he wants to do nothing but wallow in misery for a day or two. His two best friends are having none of that, though. Instead, they place a personal ad on his behalf in their school's online newspaper. And suddenly, girls all over school, and even a few from other schools, are interested in being his date for the evening. His friends, without his consent, decide to narrow his prospective prom companions to 24 girls that he will have dates with over seven days. The trouble is Jack is a little intimidated by the girls he meets, and the only girls he finds himself comfortable with are his best friend Natalie and someone he talks to online whom he knows only as FancyPants.

I picked this book up on a whim while browsing the Young Adult section of my library. The title was something that grabbed my attention only because its phrasing seemed a little flashy. I opened it up and read the first few pages, which made me laugh (quietly, of course, because I was in the middle of the library), and before I knew it, I had stood at the shelf and read the first five chapters of the book. So, of course, I had to check it out, and I finished the book that same night—it's that funny and that engaging. And when I say it's that funny, I really mean it's that funny. The banter between the characters, Jack's inner dialogue, the situations the author creates: they are all just hilarious. The author's sense of humor is reason enough to give the book a chance.

One point to subtract from the book's favor is just how quickly certain plot points move. I know that the book takes place over roughly a week, and I know that there are a slew of female characters who make appearances, but some of the encounters are so quick that I had trouble keeping all of the different possible prom dates straight. There is also a specific conflict with Jack and one of his friends that is brought up and resolved much faster than I would have anticipated. Of course, the fact that the book does move so quickly also works in its favor. I wouldn't have been able to read it in one night otherwise. The pacing helps to keep you interested.

So, the verdict? You should read this book. It's funny, it's an easy read, and you probably won't be able to put it down.
