Troy is a 17-year-old 298 pound "Fat Kid" and boy does he know it. He's miserable about every aspect of his life and considering suicide when he encounters Curt - a skinny, homeless, musical genius who used to attend Troy's High School. Curt adopts Troy, aware that he's saved his life, and enlists him as a drummer for his band Rage/Tectonic. Cut isn't bothered by the fact that Troy is a fat kid who can barely take a few steps without wheezing or sweating or even the fact that he can't play the drums! Curt is energetic with an overwhelming faith in Troy and soon Troy finds himself desiring everything Curt believes he can be.

Fat Kid Rules the World is an entertaining and inspiring book. KL Going perfectly depicts the characters whom you come to love and understand. I found myself cringing as I came to understand Troy's feelings of zero self worth and his unhappiness with his weight. I felt guilty for the occasions when I'd thought negatively of an overweight child.

Fat Kid Rules the World is a book that's worth checking out.

NOTE: Fat Kid Rules the World includes moderate level offensive language. The book is more appropriate for older and more mature teens and not some of Portrait’s youngest readers.
