Further Chronicles of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery
Review by: Amanda

This book collects several of Lucy Maude Montgomery’s short stories that are set in the same world as her Anne of Green Gables novels. Some of the characters the stories center on have made brief appearances in those novels as well.

The Anne of Green Gables series of novels is one of my favorite things to read. I go back and reread them every so often. They are comfortable and familiar. So, I thought reading the collection of short stories set in the same world would help the stories continue in a way. And, this collection is a nice read for an Anne fan, but probably not really for the casual reader. A lot of the stories just aren’t as charming as her full length novels. There is just that small spark of something missing. It could be because the stories run the gamut from love stories to reconciliations to ghost stories. It‘s a strange mix, that despite being in a familiar setting, doesn‘t really connect at all.

That being said, there are a few stories that stand out. My favorites are the ones that focus on classic mix-ups and misunderstandings between friends and family members. They most closely resemble the spirit of Montgomery’s novels.
