Andrea Anderson is a professional spectator of life. At school, at home and everywhere in between she watches everything play out before her, playing out some script which casts her in a minor roll. Then one day she accepts a job working for Honora Menaplace, a reclusive neighbor who is battling cancer. Andrea’s role is clear: help Honora with her garden and her pottery and of course her gorgeous dog Zena. But over time Andrea finds her script changing as she discovers new friends, new adventures and a whole new way of viewing the world.

Skin Deep is a novel any teen could relate to. Andrea is such an every day teenage girl; she struggles with fitting in and feeling special while seeking out her place in this world. She isn’t a dazzlingly gorgeous and popular movie star character that no one could actually relate to – she’s completely real and I loved it.

E.M. Crane paints a beautiful story with vivid metaphors and memorable characters. Skin Deep was an unexpected delight and just like it’s title implies, there’s a lot more to it then first meets the eye!
