Set during the Second World War 'The Girls they left behind' is the story of Natalie (Birth name Beryl) a teenage girl growing up in the face of war. It seems sometimes she's constantly being left behind as friends and family go to fight in the war. But Natalie is determined to not sit on the sidelines, she's going to do what she can to help the war effort.

Written from the heart 'The Girls they left behind' is the late Bernice Thurman Hunter's last novel. Written from her own memories of growing up during WW2 the novel is honest and historically factual. The character of Natalie is entirely appealing and loveable and through her diary entries and the letters to her cousin fighting overseas the reader is transported into war era Canada.

A touching novel worth reading by any teen interested in reading what it was like for teenagers during a dark moment in our worlds history.
