As Mary abides by her family’s instructions on how to catch the king’s heart, her joy is cut short when she discovers that she is only pawn in the dynastic plots of her family to claim the throne. When the capricious king’s interest wanes, Mary finds herself in a dilemma; to give up her love and pass the golden opportunity to whom she has always counted on to help her claim her king and become queen-her own sister, Anne. Mary, now, will be no more than the other Boleyn girl.
I have been following the subject of King Henry VIII and his wives and mistresses rather closely recently and I have found this book most intriguing. Its plot is filled with schemes and plotting to remove Queen Catherine from the throne and two sisters fighting for the love of wealthiest man in the kingdom; one for love, and the other for the title and glory which comes from it. But it can be emotional at times, since after all, there would be disappointment from so much of plotting.
I’d have to say that Philippa Gregory did a good job on this book and I’ll definitely be reading her other books on the Tudor Court. The plot kept me peeled to the book and its vivid description helped me in visualising the contents in the book.
But I find it hard to convince myself that certain things in the book could have actually happened in the past. Well, I guess that’s the author’s definition of historical fiction then.
I have heard from a few of my friends that the movie would be coming out soon. I enjoyed this book, and I think I might enjoy the movie too.
