Fact: Adapted into a film in 2002 starring Shane West and Mandy Moore
|
The adaption of A Walk to Remember, starring Shane West and Mandy Moore was released in January 2002. The book, as with most adaptions, is quite a different story. I strongly recommend doing both experiences however. The book is narrated in first person perspective of the main character Landon Carter, through some unexpected circumstances, he finds himeself spending time with Jamie Sullivan, a quiet girl who always carries a Bible with her everywhere. A girl who spends her time helping orphans, and truly doesn't care what other people think of her, She'd change him for the better.
I love this story! It's so inspiring, and makes you wish you were more like Jamie. It's a must read that will make you laugh and cry (as Landon promises in the early pages).

“First you laugh, and then you will cry- don’t say you haven’t been warned”
Landon Carter is just this ordinary teenage boy living in North Carolina, USA in the late 1950s. He hasn’t got a clue about what he might want to be when he grows up and is basically just slacking around in school.
He takes drama class in his senior year and Jamie Sullivan, the widowed minister’s daughter, is also taking the class.
They will be performing a play called The Christmas Angel, and Jamie has been cast as the title character. Landon also happens to be the Student Council President and when he breaks up with his girlfriend, he needs a date for the Homecoming Dance and as a last resort, takes Jamie.
Jamie is the kind of girl that no guy would take out, even though she was not bad-looking. She always dressed plainly, no make-up whatsoever, hair in a bun and carried her bible everywhere with her. Plus, her father never allowed her to have a boyfriend. She is always happy and optimistic, ready to help practically anyone and anything. Many of Landon’s friends and most people regard Jamie as what people nowadays will call ‘a freak’.
After the dance, life resumes as it is, until Jamie persuades Landon into playing the leading male in the play. They begin to bond as Jamie gets Landon to walk her home from rehearsals everyday. They talk about life, her bible and things, until the day before the play, when Landon has had a very bad day, he loses his temper on Jamie.
Before the play, Landon apologises to Jamie and she accepts it. On the stage, when Jamie is in her angel costume, Landon finally sees how beautiful Jamie really is. The two of them continue to bond over Christmas, as Landon wants to make up for being so mean to her before. But he ends up falling hard for her and wonders if she does feel the same way.
I thought this book was a true tear-jerker. Make sure you have a box of tissues while reading it. It also had funny bits, just like it promises at the start in the prologue. One can really relate to it as it is written in simple, casual language with a pinch of humor. I loved this book, and I’m going to check out the other Nicholas Sparks books. I will definitely catch the movie version as well!
Review #3 - By Gayle
Miracles can happen…
Every April, when the air smelt of pine, salt and sea, Landon Carter is reminded of his last year at Beaufort High. With his youth returning as that eventful year, 1958 approaches…
Landon had dated a girl or two and even sworn that he had been in love. But the person he had least expected to fall in love with was to Jamie Sullivan.
Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town’s widowed Baptist minister, was the most ethereal person you would ever meet. She always talks about God and his plans and always has a bible in her hands. And she makes no effort to doll herself up- with her hair in a bun and no makeup on. Landon had never even thought twice about being friends with Jamie; much less develop a relationship with her. But when he is stumped on his date for the high school dance and takes Jamie as a last resort, he feels indebted to her and when she asks him for a favour to take part in a play, The Christmas Angel, he agrees.
After the play and spending Christmas with Jamie, Landon begins to see Jamie for who she is, and the inner beauty within her. Soon, he inevitably falls for her and both start going out with each other.
As they spend more time together, Jamie shows him the ways of life and then, Landon discovers a horrible secret about Jamie, his sweet Jamie…
I do not usually cry over fiction-whether in the movies or in books. But I couldn’t help but tear after reading this book. This tragic yet sweet love story was really emotional and really spiritual. I have to say that Nicholas Sparks is genius. This is by far, the most emotional book I have ever read.
First you smile, and then you will cry - don’t say you haven’t been warned.
