Cellular
Review by: Kat

"If the signal dies so does she." Though she's held captive, Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger) manages to contact an unsuspecting young man (Chris Evans) via his cell phone. As he becomes her only lifeline to thwarting the abduction of her young son, the good samaratin soon gets way more than he bargained for.

'Fantastic Four' and 'The Perfect Score' heart throb Chris Evans makes his true feature film debut as a heroic and loveable lead thrus into an adventure beyound his wildest dreams. "How did you get involved in this?", "I just answered my phone". The script expertly weaves emotion and humour as he sets out to do whatever he can to help a person he doesn't even know. Kim successfully plays the terrified but not cowardly mother trying to save her family. Seasoned actor William H. Macy plays the loveable policeman Mooney who inadvertanly ends up Ryan's only hope of help from the men in blue. He's close to retirement and is planning on starting a beauty salon, sorry, day spa with his wife. "But.. your wound seems gangrenous...", "Oh, that's a mud mask. For combination skin". He's a very real character, not some unrealistic macho cop.

An aspect of this film I admire is the fact that the story deals with death not as a merely celebrateable defeat of evil but a terrible thing. Jessica actually apologizes when she harms one of her kidnappers. This is a fantastic change from most American action movies which deal with the taking of a life so lightly.

Occasional elements of light humour keep spirits up while not coming off as cheesy or contrived. You'll laugh one minute then grip your seats armrests the next.

From start to finish Cellular is a thrilling ride that keeps your heart pounding. You can't help but love and relate to the characters you're watching. An enjoyable and intelligent action/thriller that is a must see!
