Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Review by: Whitney
When Willie Wonka, the famous enigmatic candy factory owner, decides to open up his factory to five children after 15 long years, the brutal race is on to get one of the coveted Golden Tickets. Kids from all over the world desperately buy candy bar after candy bar, but eventually only the most rich, talented, and, well, bratty ones end up with the prize. So when painfully ordinary, poor Charlie Bucket wins the last one, he's as surprised as anyone else. Soon, Charlie and the other winners--snotty Veruca Salt, greedy Augustus Gloop, competitive Violet Beauregarde, and technology-obsessed Mike Teavee--will embark upon the tour of their lives. Willie Wonka and his mysterious, song-loving Oompa Loompas are stranger and possibly more dangerous than they seem, and this wacky factory is full of surprises!
It's almost impossible not to enjoy this movie. You'll laugh. You'll cry (from laughing so hard). You'll be singing the crazy songs for days afterwards. The flashbacks and one-liners from Willie Wonka will have you nearly screaming with laughter. Tim Burton is wonderfully inventive, and if you're expecting a happy, cheesy remake of the old-fashioned original then think again. The sets are mind boggling and really cool, and Johnny Depp's performance is hilariously odd. If you're looking for a funny, funky, not-too-deep DVD to rent, this is the Golden Ticket.
