Emma
Review by: Amanda

Gwenyth Paltrow stars as the title character who means well when she attempts to play matchmaker for her friend Harriet (Toni Collette), but her own prejudices and self involvement prevent her from actually creating successful matches. While focusing so much attention on her friend, Emma neglects her own love life, and almost misses her chance. Attempting to help her along the way is Mr. Knightly (Jeremy Northam) who seems to see things around him much more clearly than Emma does, often giving her advice and bringing her back down to earth.

I know that there have been countless versions of Emma adapted from Jane Austen's novel for the screen over the years, and this one is usually left behind, but I think this one is actually one of my favorites. It's so easy to watch. It's one of those movies that, even though it is a period piece, you can just relax and let the actors do their work. All of the actors do remarkable jobs in this, and I love Jeremy Northam and Toni Collette in particular. Even though Gwenyth Paltrow is the star, Harriet and Knightly are two of my favorite characters. Emma can be hard to like sometimes because she is so high brow, while Harriet and Knightly are particularly honest and good characters. They don't pay so much attention to station or breeding as the rest of the group focused on does.

This is a pretty faithful adaptation of the novel. I'm sure Austen purists will take offense to a few things here and there (or maybe more than a few), but as a movie, it is enjoyable and light.
