Full Court Miracle
Review by: Amanda

The Lions are quite possibly the worst basketball team in the league. They rely heavily on their star player Alex Schlotsky (Alex D. Linz), and that reliance is getting them nowhere. After hearing the story of Chanukah in his history class, Alex sets out to find his team a hero, their very own Judah Maccabee, and he strikes a deal with a former basketball player (Richard T. Jones) who’s career is on hold since he blew out his knee. During the most important game of the season, a thunder storm knocks out the power, and they have to rely on the generator to finish the game. No lights, no playing allowed. And there’s only enough fuel left for a few minutes of game time.

Every year as Christmas rolls around, it seems that television networks and movie studios gear up for the holiday by putting out movies centering on Christmas magic, but rarely does the Jewish holiday Chanukah get a spotlight. A few years ago, Disney decided to make it’s own movie depicting the history of the traditions, pairing it up with a story based on the actual experiences of Lamont Carr (Jones). I’m so glad they did. The film does a great job of teaching people about a culture they may not be familiar with while still being a fun family film. It’s a sports movie without relying solely on the sport to carry it. It has a message of keeping the faith, which you don‘t necessarily have to translate to the Jewish religion, and it provides a more realistic portrayal of those who are Jewish, not the stereotypes that have become so common on screen.

Absolutely an enjoyable film for anyone.
