Last Friday I went to the movie theatre like millions of people around the world to watch the most anticipated movie of the year. Of course I wasn’t even a little excited because honestly, I hate Twilight. But since I’m in film school I have to watch every movie to know what is happening in the industry. To say that these movies are overrated would be a serious understatement.
Where do I begin ... I'll start explaining why I hated the first movie and also the book, which I tried reading but found so bad that I closed it after the first half. I’m not a big fan of Vampire stories, but as many others know Twilight doesn’t really abide by the things that define both Vampires and werewolves; Vampires burn in the sun, they don’t glow. Vampires are supposed to be beautiful, and Rob isn't exactly the definition of beautiful.
New moon talks about Bella and Edwards’s relationship coming to an end because Jasper tried to kill her after she gets a paper cut. Edward goes away to protect her and leaves her all alone in Forks. Bella is so depressed she doesn’t talk to anyone. She realises that the only way to see Edward again, albeit in her imagination only, is with an adrenaline rush. She buys two motorcycles in terrible conditions and asks Jacob to fix them. Jacob is in love with her so he happily agrees. Bella has more problems than she thinks because Victoria is out to get her, to kill her ( I wish that would have happened!), because Edward killed her boyfriend. Then Bella does something stupid (surprise!) and Edward thinks she's dead and he wants to die too (Romeo and Juliet much?).
This movie is wrong on so many levels that I don’t know where to begin! I'll start by saying the script is a hot mess (of course, if you don’t have a good book, you won’t have a good script) during the first two hours nothing happens, it's plain and boring. During the last half Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen show that even if the script is a mess, they're not. I know you'll think I’m not a romantic, I really am, but there's a fine line between romantic and pathetic.
The special effects were an upgrade from the first movie but they were still bad. With all the incredible technology and the big budget for the film that probably went into Robert's hair and Taylor's muscles, they could've done so much better! The werewolves were terrible! They didn’t look real at all! The special effects team of ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ proved that you can make real looking animals. The werewolves bring me back to the script (therefore the book... again). Since when do werewolves change whenever they wanted? Aren't they supposed to change only on a full moon? Anyway, the only part that I thought the effects looked good was in the last fight, other than that, it didn’t look like the high budget film it was.
I'll end by talking about the acting. Isn’t it weird that everyone has at least a little bit of talent in this movie, except the leads?
Come on! Even Cameron Bright who said like, two words shows that he's talented. Rob and Kristen have the same plain and boring voice, face, and attitude through the entire movie. Taylor Lautner is like a diamond in the rough, he has the talent but there's just so much you can do with a bad script. As I said before, Dakota and Michael are truly some of the best actors in the world. They deliver, they make you believe in what's happening, their performances are engaging, something that no other actor or actress in the movie (besides Ashley Greene, maybe) accomplishes. And they are the reason why I’m not giving a 0 to the movie.
What team am I in? Jacob? Edward? More like Team Victoria! Kill them all and end this suffering!
At least I had a good laugh; it's the most I have laughed in a non-comedic movie.
