Serenity Review
By Whitney

The war with the powerful multi-planet Alliance is over, but all is not calm in the galaxy. Years after humans had to move on to other planets after Earth became too crowded, many new societies joined in an Alliance. However, it soon became too powerful and secretive, and some outer planets resisted. Known as Browncoats, the rebels fought for as long as they could, but the Alliance proved too strong. They were defeated, and now a small group of former Browncoats survive on the ship Serenity by scavenging for food and supplies. They have accepted their fate, but when they stumble upon an Alliance secret that they cannot keep silent, they must once again risk their lives for the sake of good.

Serenity is no Star Wars, despite several comparisons in recent reviews. Granted, this film was not made on a million-dollar budget, there are no big stars, it is based on a cancelled TV show--and despite all that, the plot still manages to be thought-provoking and semi-intelligent. However, the bad points just-barely outweigh the good in this case. The dialogue is awkward, the acting is at times somewhat forced, and major suspension-of-belief is required simply for viewing. Serenity tries, but it ultimately fails to engage or move past a two-dimensional story with one-dimensional characters. While entertaining enough and while having many good aspects, Serenity remains a mediocre film.
