Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Reviews

Review #1 - by Kat

Laugh. Cry. Share the pants.

Four lifelong friends spend their first summer apart; before parting ways they find a pair of jeans at a thrif shop that 'magically' fit all 4 of them, despite their different heights and sizes; they agree to share the pants over their summer. Each is faced with challenges and life experiences, through the pants (which become a symbol of their friendship and love for one another as well as a source of strength) they are kept together.

Generally adaptions never stand up to the book. However, Sisterhood really does. The story isn't the truest of adaptions (Fans of the book: Lena's story is completely different. Disappointingly so) but in some ways that's a good thing.

The performances are fantastic. Especially America Ferrera's and Amber Tamblyn's.

The film is rather clean and suitable for younger audiences, some things are simply implied and are over younger heads; while still not alienating the teen audience the film is targeted at.

The best films make you laugh and cry; Sisterhood suceeds in both.

Must see!

Based on the New York Times's best selling author's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, the movie adaptation of the novel is absolutely astounding. I was lucky enough to see it and I absolutely loved it!

Sisterhood tells the story of three life-long friends who are forced to spend a summer apart. While in a thirft store, the girls find a pair of pants that somehow fit all three of their different body shapes. The girls decide that the pants are magic and decide to share the pants through out the summer while they're away. The pants each bring a little magic to the girls on their adventures.

When you read a book and then see a movie, the movie never really even compares to the book. Sisterhood is certainly an exception. The performances from the girls, especially Amber Tamblyn and America Ferrera, are absolutely moving. The set is also absolutely astounding, especially the scenes with Alexis Bledel's character, Lena in Greece.

While I love this movie, fans of the book may be disappointed. The story doesn't tend to stay true to the book. For example, Lena's story is completely different.

This is an absolutely amazing movie. While I know movies like this are never really considered for awards such as a Golden Globe, I am quite surprised none of the actresses were nominated. In my eyes, the performances are Golden-Globe-worthy performances.

Review #3 - by Natalie

I have to admit, I have not read Ann Brashares’s novel, which may be why I did not bother to catch this in the cinemas. Nevertheless, when this movie came out on DVD, I decided to watch it as it was, at first sight, a ‘chick flick’.

The first time I watched Sisterhood, I actually found it boring (I was doing something else while watching, see). However, the second time I watched it, the movie actually moved me to tears, and you know what? I have never ever cried during a movie before. Not even in Titanic.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is about 4 lifelong friends who are, for the first time in their lives, separated for the summer. While visiting a shop on the eve of their separation, they discover a pair of pants that fits all of them. They thus forge the sisterhood, allowing this pair of pants to travel around the world throughout the summer and keep their friendship strong and alive.

Out of all the characters, I liked Lena and Bailey the best. Bailey may not be part of the sisterhood, but she certainly changed Tibby’s perspective of life. Tibby originally was a very rebellious, kind of negative sort of person, but when Bailey came along, Bailey taught Tibby that “Life isn’t about being perfect, it’s about string together all the little things, and making them count more than the bad stuff”.

I read on Potrait that Lena’s story is completely different from the book. In the movie Lena, was this shy girl who met this boy in Greece named Kostas who taught her how to take chances and be who she is.

I also loved the cast. Gilmore Girls actress Alexis Bledel stars as the ‘beautiful’ Lena, Joan of Arcadia actress Amber Tamblyn stars as Tibby the ‘rebel’, America Ferrera stars as ‘writer’ Carmen and newcomer Blake Lively is the ‘wild, unstoppable’ Bridget. I thought Blake Lively did an awesome job as Bridget, showing the wild side of her as well as the vulnerable side.

I won’t give away any more details, because you have to watch the movie yourself, but Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants definitely qualifies as a ‘Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul’.
